Kingkong City - Expats Retreat

89%
Found this guide helpful

Hongkong is still for many Expats in China a place to smell a different air. Here restaurants and pubs are different from Mainland, and you still feel like not really in China - Although the differences got much less after the takeover, but not all time in a positive way. You can have site seeing, excellent food, high level shopping (cheaper than mainland and often than Europe too), an open society and a vibrant city. Lets take a stroll through some of the places...

Ralf M's City Tips

  • Another must is taking the Star Ferry from Tsimshatsui to the island (or other way). It gives you a great view and impression about the city.
  • You can take the tram from one end to the other for less than 3 HK$, go to upper deck with a camera, the cheapest way of site seeing.
  • If you stay only few days in Hong Kong, make a tourist bus ride around the island with its stops for leaving and reentering the bus.
  • On a very clear night in summer take a taxi to the Victoria Peak for a marvelous view. Not the Public Transport stuff, or do you want to queue up for hours?
  • Be careful at shops, especially in Mong Kok and Nathan Rd. etc, many try to drag in tourists and offer cheap prices, but later on try to sell totally different items to them.
  • If you go by public transport a lot, buy an Octopus Card for convenience. Or you must have the right coins all time. Often public transport is easier and faster than taking a taxi.

Star Ferry is not only a transportation tool, it is a museum in itself, showing a bit of the old Hong Kong.
