Cheap and cheerful Hong Kong

Get value for your tourist dollar on local transport, a cheap and useful way to explore this city. One option is the Octopus Card available at the airport rail station. It's valid on the Airport Express, MTR, Light Rail, Buses, Trams, Ferries and other services all over Hong Kong. Better for intensive use on Hong Kong's transport system and may not be the best option for some travellers who require minimal trips on trains or buses plus a return trip to the airport. Check out the MRT website for more card types available to tourists and more information on the Octopus Card conditions of use. A card deposit plus stored value is one condition for this card but has a long use by date if you want to keep it for further use on another visit.

Globebugs's City Tips

  • Seamless transfers are found everywhere around the city. Take the MRT to Hong Is, board a tram and ride one end to the other then catch a ferry back to Kowloon - my favourite trip.
  • Use of the card varies so tap on/off at gates to the MTR stations, the same for ferries and on readers at the front of trams and buses.
  • Stored value avoids using notes or coins and saves time. Another option is to buy a return ticket on the Airport Express for a few dollars less and keep your card for the city.

Good Asian choices and interesting outlets - found all over the city, usually in shopping malls. Really enjoy Express Teppanyaki for freshly cooked food while you watch.

Hectic, full of atmosphere with local shopping choices and good restaurants. Its feels like the heart and soul of the old the Hong Kong. Men still wear cane hats and singlets - this is a densely populated district of the city.

Tourist and local's hub with many chain stores and restaurants. Busy and eclectic atmosphere day and night. Plenty of shopping choices although no bargains or haggling over prices. This is the place to shop till you drop with plenty of cafes for that much needed break.

    • Be prepared for the crowds especially at weekends and after work weekdays. A good way to see it is upstairs on a tram in either direction.

Cultural and political centre with high end shops.Good architectural gems plus the Central Star Ferry Pier and new Ferris Wheel are located here. Many laneway stalls during weekdays for some good bargains. Cash is king here at these small family owned enterprises.
