George K's City Tips

  • Vietnam doesn’t have a specific rule on tipping, and it generally isn't expected.
  • Prices of goods in supermarkets, pharmacies, restaurants, hotels, official transport, and convenience stores are usually fixed.
  • Always ask permission before taking someone’s photo, and do not photograph anything to do with the military.
  • For transport by rickshaw, tuk tuk, moto, and any taxi service in Hanoi, always bargain and make sure that you agree on the fare before you set off.
  • Dress modestly when visiting temples and pagodas.
  • Avoid passing anything over someone’s head.
  • Picking up rubbish sets a good example for Vietnamese youths.

Also known as Silk Street, this is the best area to pick up high-quality silk items — anything from dresses and apparel to home furnishings. The entire, busy, 300 meter-long street is lined with boutiques, tailors, and fashion stores. Two of my favorites are Khai Silk and the colorful Tan My Design, both offering good quality, ready-to-wear fashion. You'll also find narrow souvenir shops squeezed in between the high profile boutiques here, which sell far cheaper — but lower quality — items.

The Hanoi Weekend Night Market is a busy, bustling gathering of stalls and vendors, that takes place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 7pm to 11pm. The market runs through the Old Quarter, starting at Hang Dao Street and running north to the edge of Dong Xuan Market. Besides the wide range of items on sale, it is a fun place to experience, and there are plenty stalls offering good street food.

    George K Says:

This is the largest market in Hanoi with a wide array of products for sale over four floors. Located in the Dong Xuan Street on the northern edge of the Old Quarter, it is an imposing Soviet-style building, surrounded on all sides by merchant shops and stalls. It is a rough-and-ready type of market, if not a bit dirty — especially the ground floor wet market area. However, up the stairs you will find cheap printed tees, bolts of fabric, school uniforms, luggage stalls and much more, all available at wholesale prices. It is quite an experience, even if you only leave with a pair of cheap sunglasses and a Vietnamese conical hat.

Trang Tien Plaza is on Trang Tien Street at the beginning of the French Quarter. Hanoi’s wealthy inhabitants — top business execs and celebrities alike — flock here to shop for luxury brands and designer products in all shapes and sizes. The mall is spread over five floors and includes outlets representing leading international names such as Burberry and Louis Vuitton, pricey electronic and homeware stores, as well as a gourmet supermarket which stock many expat home comforts. There are also some excellent international restaurants on the fifth floor.

Take a break from the traditional and step into this upmarket shop while you're strolling along Hang Gai for silks and hemp clothing. As well as a wide selection of homeware — which make for useful souvenir gifts — there is a cafe on-site if you're in need of a shopping pit-stop.

If you're after more one-of-a-kind Vietnamese souvenirs, then Hanoi Art Gallery is a good place to start your search. As well as selling the latest contemporary creations by Vietnamese artists, you'll also find a wide selection of Communist Party propaganda and other vintage posters here. There are several locations, of which 17 Nha Chung is perhaps the most convenient.
