Although it's not a major shopping destination like Oahu, Kauai has its own charms, with a mix of major retailers, mom-and-pop shops, outdoor markets, jewelry stores, art galleries, and handicraft boutiques. Look for the "Kauai Made" stamp when you're shopping for one-of-a-kind souvenirs!

Rachel H's City Tips

  • Tipping 15-20% is customary and appreciated for good service.
  • Most grocery store food is shipped from the mainland, so don't be surprised by higher-than-normal prices.
  • Some local markets, cafes, and coffee shops only accept cash. There are numerous ATMs and banks on the island.
  • Kauai is divided into four parts: North Shore (Princeville), South Shore (Poipu), East Side (Lihue/Kapaa), and West Side (Waimea).
  • Rent a car from the Lihue airport for the easiest and most efficient way to get around.
  • Bring a rain jacket or windbreaker, as Kauai gets the most rainfall of any Hawaiian island.
  • The average temperature range is 69-85 degrees Fahrenheit (18-29 Celsius). Trade winds keep the weather comfortable year-round.

An open-air shopping center in South Shore, Poipu Shopping Village is a great place to enjoy some retail therapy and sample traditional Hawaiian culture. There are lots of local boutiques and clothing stores where you can find everything from casual beachwear to fine jewelry. There are also plenty of convenience stores for your daily needs.

Located very close to the Lihue airport, Kukui Grove Center (East Side) makes for a great pit-stop to stock up on your vacation essentials. It's Kauai’s largest shopping center, and features big-name stores like Costco, Kmart, Sports Authority, Ross (deals on popular apparel and housewares brands), and Macy’s.

While exploring the cute North Shore town of Hanalei — which is set against a beautiful backdrop of ridged mountains and palm trees — pop into Harvest Market Hanalei, a health food store chock-full of organic, local products. Specializing in gluten-free, raw, and dairy-free items, this typical Kauai market gives you a glimpse at local culinary culture.

As the only shopping center in Princeville, the Princeville Center has a little bit of everything: a grocery store, a pharmacy, gift shops, jewelry stores, a post office, an ice cream parlor, and some restaurants, among other things. If you find yourself short on anything while you’re on the North Shore, this is a good place to find more.

On Friday nights, you can check out the local art scene at the Hanapepe art walk (South Shore). Local artists open up their galleries and studios for an evening street festival, with live music, food, and, of course, shopping. And even if you're visiting on another day, Hanapepe is still worth a visit, with its many cute galleries, artisan boutiques, and cafes — all housed in old plantation buildings. This small town has a lot of character, and it served as the model for the Disney film 'Lilo and Stitch.'
