Wailua Falls is spectacular, especially after a heavy rainfall. If you're old enough to remember Fantasy Island, this will look familiar. If you're not that old, but remember Jurassic Park, you'll recognize it. There are no facilities there, so bring your camera and a bottle of water.
Spouting Horn is one of those places you have to visit. It's beautiful in itself, and the view is fabulous. If the kids get bored, make a game of it. Guess how far they can count between spouts.
Beautiful beach and not usually really crowded. The surf can get rough as there is no fringing reef, so watch the kiddos. Great view.
If you're headed to the North Shore, you absolutely must stop here. The view is incredible.
This is obligatory for first-timers. It's very pretty and the short show is nice. Great place to get married.
These falls are not as spectacular as others, but they are the easiest to get to. Watch for the sign on the main road. The scenery is very nice and there is a large parking lot.
One of the best beaches on the island, so it is almost always packed. The parking lot isn't huge and there may not be a place to park. Plan to get there very early to be guaranteed a parking spot.
Turn off the main highway and follow the signs for Anini Beach. There are three parts to the beach. The first part is just after you make a left turn and have the water on your right. This part of the beach is small and parking is limited. The water here is shallow and there is a tide pool that is perfect for very young children to play in. No facilities here. Further down, you will come around a corner and down a grade and see a large house on your right. After the first house is a walkway to the beach. Parking is limited. This part of the beach is the least known and mostly used by locals. There is lots of shade. There is coral and fish and it's a lovely little spot. There are no facilities. Keep going, past the last of the houses on the right, and you will come to the main part of the beach. There is a boat ramp, a large grassy area, restrooms, usually a food truck, until about 3:00 and lots of parking. This part of the beach is popular with windsurfers, so be alert when swimming or snorkeling.
Unfortunately, Coconut Marketplace isn't the thriving center it once was, but the new owners are renovating it and hopefully it will once again be a bustling center. There are several places to eat and shop remaining. There is a free hula show once a week and a farmer's market. There are restrooms and a grassy area in the middle where the kids can play while you shop.
Located in the Coconut Marketplace, this little eatery has good burgers, teriyaki chicken, salads, saimin soup, and many more items. The prices are good and it's not fancy, but it's clean. Get there early if you want a seat by the rail to watch the hula show. Service is always fast and friendly. No liquor, but they invite you to bring your own from the nearby Whaler's Market.
Located in historic Kapaa, this store has great shave ice and lots of items you won't find in every other store on Kauai. They will securely package your fragile purchases to travel home with you.
Best breakfast on Kauai! Their breakfast menu is huge and everything is delicious! Their banana mac nut pancakes are the best I've found. Yummy omelets and other dishes. They are also open for lunch and their lunch menu is great. Shave ice is on the outside of the restaurant and is reportedly the best on the island. The parking lot isn't huge, but you can park on the street behind. You may have to wait because the locals love this place too!
This place is hard to find. There is a sign on the main highway, but you can miss it. Call and ask for directions. Great view, full bar with the best Blue Hawaii I've ever tasted and great Mai-tais. They have a salad bar which comes with all meals. They specialize in steak and seafood. One of my favorite places to eat on Kauai.
Located in the Coconut Marketplace, this place has lots of variety. Their teriyaki beef and ribs are my favorites. It's very casual with outdoor seating. You order at the window and pick it up when it's ready. You can call ahead to save time. Good prices.
