Monica U's City Tips

  • The customary time to dine in Australia is 7.30pm. If you want to get a seat or arrive without a booking, try to get there at around 6.30pm or opt for the European tradition of dining later.
  • Ditch the public transport and hire one of the 2,000 bikes available in 150 stations around Brisbane.
  • Gratuity is not customary in Australia, however a small tip is always appreciated.

    Monica U Says:

Esquire's only offering is a 'small,' carefully constructed degustation menu that comes to life daily based on the whim of Executive Chef Ryan Squires. It is an amazing journey of textures, colors, flavors, and combinations: Think buffalo jerky, green mustard and orange, or pastrami pickles, onion, and ketchup. Come here with someone that appreciates adventure and food, and can withhold an opinion until after the food has been properly tasted with matching wines.

    Tips
    • It is tempting to watch the budget and skip the matching wines ... but don't. Come here for the whole food and wine pairing experience.
    • Degustation menus are on the pricier side, so come prepared to pay and fully enjoy the experience.
    • If you think that dinner at Esquire would make a perfect gift for someone, you can go online and buy a gift card.

I am a fan of breakfast places that open until 2.30pm. Pablo's is nestled in a small 'hole in the wall' in fashionable Brunswick street. Their coffee and pastries are excellent, but it is the pure creative genius of Pablo's breakfast creations that keeps me coming back again and again.

What do you get when you combine classic French food with an Australian twist, served in a tiny restaurant with no tables, just stools set around a small bar? Anise Bistro. To complete the disorienting but mouth-watering adventure, the staff are all wearing checked shirts and recommend the most amazing wines to sip with your dinner. A winning newcomer to New Farm.

Located next to one of the coolest warehouse-converted hotels in the city, Chur Burger is an institution. My favorite is the pulled pork, Chur BBQ sauce, red slaw, and fennel mayo burger. Keep an eye out for the 'city' specials that come out every week. Chur Burger is also open for breakfast and, yes, they serve fried eggs with pulled pork!

I come from a family that loves food. So when I heard that Tony, a little Italian boy from Naples, had managed to arrive in Brisbane and realize his dream of making the perfect pizza, cooked for no more than 60 seconds, and using only the freshest ingredients from within a 200 meter radius ... I came. I ate. I went to heaven. Mamma Mia!

Enter a world far away from home and be transported to an oasis of calm in the middle of the Brisbane CBD. Get taken away to a forgotten authentic Japanese kingdom complete with top notch, classically trained Japanese chefs, kimono-clad waitresses, and the most exquisite authentic Japanese cooking. This place has the best sushi I've ever tasted outside Japan. The presentation of the dishes is exquisite as well.

There is no place in Brisbane where I would get my 'dumpling fix' other than at Bamboo Basket.
