Francisco F's City Tips

  • Given that taxis are inexpensive and widely available, they are the easiest, and often cheapest, way to get around.
  • The Lisbon public transportation network is vast and easy. One-day tickets are good for unlimited travel, or Zapping cards allow you to add credit, which is deducted per ride.
  • Wear comfortable shoes for city walking, and don't forget to pack sunscreen and water.
  • From hotels to restaurants to attractions, Lisbon is overall great value when compared with other European capitals. Take the opportunity to splurge on your family!
  • Tipping is discretionary, but it is customary to tip 10% of your total bill when you feel the service merits it.

Pastelaria Versailles is a favorite haunt of 'Alfacinhas' (Lisbon-born locals), and the highly recommended breakfast spot is sure to get any family adventure off to a great start. If you love pastries, you'll find a great selection of fresh, high-quality delights here, and the ambiance is a pleasant reminder of Lisbon's lasting elegance.

The Lisbon Oceanarium is one of the largest aquariums in the world; and although it is a little far from downtown, it's definitely worth a family visit. The architecture of the building itself is impressive, and inside the facility is divided into oceans, so that you get to explore different ecosystems from around the world.
