    TravelFranceOnline Says:

Santa Maria della Salute was built in the Dorsoduro district during the plague epidemic that disseminated most of Venice’s inhabitants in 1630. The church enjoys a fantastic location, as it is located a stone’s throw from the Dodge Palace and Saint Mark Basilica on the opposite bank. Its superb cupola is reflected in the waters of the Grand Canal, just at the spot where it flows into the lagoon. As you can guess, it is one of the most photographed churches in Venice. But it is also one of the churches where you’ll be able to admire an impressive series of canvases and frescoes by Titian and Tintoretto, two Great Masters Painters of the School of Venice… and this without paying any entrance fee! A few steps take you up to the church entrance. Once inside look up at the chancel’s ceiling to discover ‘The Prophet Elijah fed by an angel’, ‘The Manna” and “Habakkuk and Daniel’ painted by Il Salviati. The church contains other paintings by Il Salviati (‘The Last Supper’, ‘The Triumph of David’ and ‘Saül and David’). And if you like Titian, you won’t be disappointed either! Titian painted eight small compartments of the chancel’ ceiling with figures representing the ‘Evangelists and Doctors of the Church’. He was then 70 years! He also painted the ‘Sacrifice of Abraham’, ‘David and Goliath’ and ‘Caien and Abel’ on the ceiling of the sacristy, as well as 'St. Mark Enthroned with Saints Cosmas, Damian, Sebastian and Roch ' that adorns the high altar, and finally 'The Descent the Holy Spirit' placed above the altar of one of the chapels! It's also in the great sacristy, that you’ll discover Tintorettos’ famous 'Marriage at Cana'. As you scan the canvas, look for Tintoretto’s face, as the master couldn’t resist the temptation to include a self-portrait. He depicted himself as the 1st apostle on the left hand side! You need an hour to discover Santa Maria della Salute, but you might be tempted to stay longer or return later to get more of it as it is simply magnificent!

The 18th century Church of Santa Maria del Rosario Gesuati is also located in the Dorsoduro district, and a stone's throw from the Gallerie dell' Academia. If you like Rococo style, you’ll be impressed by its original interior decoration. The church’s masterpiece, though, is undoubtedly the ceiling painted by Giambattista Tiepolo between 1737 and 1739. The master painted 3 frescoes representing ‘The Apparition of the Virgin to St. Dominic’, ‘The Institution of the Rosary’, and ‘The Glory of St. Dominic’. He also produced the oil painting adorning the altar of the Chapel of the Dominican, and representing St. Catherine of Siena, Rosa da Lima and Agnese of Montepulciano. And surprise... Santa Maria del Rosario Gesuati contains a Tintoretto, a ‘Cruxifixion’ he painted in 1562, and which is now adorning the altar of one of the chapels! Santa Maria del Rosario Gesuati contains also several paintings by Sebastiano Ricci, including ‘Pope Pius V with Thomas Aquinas and St Peter Martyr’, a canvas he painted in 1733 and is considered one of his masterpieces! A lot to discover.

The Renaissance Church of San Sebastiano is also located in the Dosuduro district. A short stroll along the picturesque lanes will take you there, once you’ve finished visiting Santa Maria del Rosario and Santa Maria della Salute. San Sebastiano is the Must See church if you are a fan of Veronese, as not only did he paint most of the interior (walls, ceiling, altars, organ and sacristy) between 1555 and 1565, but this also where you’ll find his tomb and his bust sculpted by Matteo Cornero in 1588. San Sebastiano can thus be considered as the Church of Veronese! His paintings and frescoes have retained the brilliance of their colours. Veronese decorated the chancel with an amazing series of paintings that include ‘The Martyrdoms of St Sebastian, of St Lawrence, of St Mark and St Marcellus’, the “Coronation of the Virgin’... He painted the stunning coffered ceiling of the sacristy in 1555 with the help of his brother Benedetto. The life of Esther, Queen of Persia, is the main theme of these paintings, a theme that continues in the medallions adorning the walls. Others painters such as Caliari, Il Schiavone, de Voos, Palma, Pitati contributed to the decoration of the church, but it is estimated that San Sebastian contains more than 100 works of art painted by Veronese! The icing on the cake is that San Sebastiano also contains a painting by Tintoretto, 'The Plague of Serpents', and 'Saint Niccolo' by Titian.

The Church of San Giacomo dall'Orio is situated in the Santa Croce district, and a fifteen minute walk from the Rialto Bridge. This church is known for its beautiful carved wooden ceiling shaped as an upside-down hull. The church contains several paintings by Jacopo Negretti known as Palma the Younger, a master of the 16th century Venetian School. He painted 'The Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes' on the walls of the old sacristy, and' The Deposition of Christ " in the 16th century Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament .

The Church of Sant'Alvise is located along the Rio di Sant’Alvise in the Cannaregio district. Don’t be fooled by its plain facade; the rich decoration of its interior will surprise you! Look up as you enter; the ceiling is entirely painted with trompe-l'oeil frescoes by Pietro Ricci and Antonio Torri, two great masters of the School Venice in the 17th century. Then let your eyes go down on the walls where you discover a triptych of Giambattista Tiepolo's son Giandomenico (‘Ascent to Calvary’, ‘The Flagellation’, ‘The Coronation’), but also tempera paintings by Lazzaro Bastiani (15th century) depicting scenes from the Old Testament. As your eyes scan the walls you discover more paintings by Vecchia, Fiore, Trevasani, Morlaiter, Paoluzzi ... and always Veronese (‘The Dining at the Pharisee’)!

The church of San Polo is situated in the San Polo district, and a mere 300m from the Rialto Bridge! Here is yet another church with a wooden roof shaped as an inverted hull. You’ll have to visit the Church of San Polo if you want to admire Tintoretto’s ‘Last Supper’, ‘The Virgin with the Saints’, or ‘The Apparition of the Virgin to Saint Nepomucene’ by Giambattista Tiepolo, or ‘The Marriage of the Virgin’ by Paolo Caliari, better known as…Veronese! Giandomenico Tiepolo, the son of Giambattista, painted the 14 canvases representing the Stations of the Cross - Via Crucis on the narthex of the church. History has it that Tiepolo took members of his family as models to represent the different characters... There is more in the Church San Polo, as it also contains canavases by Palma the Younger (‘Delivery of keys to St. Peter’, Conversion of St. Paul’ and ‘Liberation of Saint Anthony’.

The Church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari or Basilica dei Frari is situated in the San Polo district, at a very short walking distance from the Church of San Polo. If you like Titian, you will be delighted as you’ll be able to admire his ‘Assumption’ that adorns the choir of the church. Titian painted this 7m high by 4m wide canvas in 1518. As you walk in the church you’ll discover a second of his paintings, his ‘Madonna di Ca 'Pesaro’, But what will also catch your attention is Titian’s Monument, which contains his heart. His statue is placed in the center of the sculptural group and is framed by the Universal Nature and the Genie of knowledge. Titian died in 1578, he was 99 years old! The Church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari contains several paintings by the prolific Palma the Younger, among which “The Martyrdom of Catherine of Alexandrai” , but also paintings of Murano, and the last canvas Vivarini (Saint Amboise, which was completed in 1503 by Basaiti). Music lover, strolling along the lateral alleys you’ll come across the tombstone of the composer Monteverdi who was buried here in 1643. The Basilica dei Frari is a Must See!
