Epic, historic, artsy, romantic, wet, enjoyable, labyrinthine, magical, frustrating, built environment, suffocating, crowded, fun, festive, contemporary, traditional, multicultural... These are a few of the characteristics this extraordinary city has. Because it really is extra-ordinary, something way different from any other city. With this guide my intention is to show you an insight of Venice in a way that you can enjoy if you only want to walk with no other purpose than feeling the city, if you are into history, if you are into museums, if you are into art, if you are into churches, etc. A general guide where people can chose were to stop and get more information.

a_isabel_a1's City Tips

  • Avoid big suitcases, you will have to carry them on and off multiple bridges. Travel light
  • Avoid big bags for daily purposes (bags are not allowed in most museums)
  • Torcello after sunset gets very dark as the island doesn't have street lighting
  • If it is raining or you have acqua alta and you are going to the islands double check with the people on the Vaporetto Station the schedules, they don't stick to the normal ones.
  • If it rains avoid the Calatrava bridge, it gets very slippery
  • Vino Rosso della Casa. The local red wine is very good and usually cheap!
  • Spritz are the local thing (sparkling water, white wine and campari or aperol)
  • Book with enough time mainly if you are going during Carnival (usually on February) or Opening of the Biennale (may).
  • You will get lost in the city, don't be afraid and enjoy it.
  • Autumn and Winter: rain boots, rain coats or at least an umbrella will be needed. But the chances of experiencing acqua-alta are high.
  • Wear comfortable shoes
  • See the Tetrarchs almost in front of the Campanile in San Marco, part of the Palazzo Ducale, they are just there and most people don't see such a master piece.
  • Ponte della Costituzione

Best known as the Calatrava Bridge, is probably the first thing you will see if you arrive at Piazzale Roma, the only place in Venice where you will find cars. It is mostly built on glass so when it is very humid or raining it gets very slippery. The Ponte della Constituzione it is also one of the four bridges that cross the Grand Canal.

With wonderful views, it is certainly one of the protagonists of the city (or THE protagonist) of the city. You can take a vaporetto and cross it all and admire the architecture or just walk and find it now and then through the fondamenta andd, as well, admire everything around it on each spot. There is also the option to take a gondola or kayak.

If you arrive by train, this is where you will arrive. For those who arrived by car or bus, once you cross the Calatrava Bridge you just keep walking until you find the Station. In front the Station you will find an information point where you can also buy your imob. Besides the vaporetto station that is infront the tourist information point you will see the Scalzi Bridge. There is a place to secure your luggage /suitcase in case you don't want to carry it.

There are six sestieri (sestiere in singular) those are the neighborhoods: Santa Croce, Dorsoduro, San Marco, San Polo, Castello and Cannaregio.

Probably the biggest campo in Venice, here is were students meet. On weekend evenings you will find them everywhere!! And sometimes even if it is not weekend. It is also a cheap but not that good place to eat and drink. A lot of backpackers can be found around here too. During the afternoons there is usually some live music playing in one of the restaurants and kids playing around. Early in the morning is nice and quiet and a lot of people crosses this spot to go to work or to school. Cross the square and go to your right at the end of it. You will find a place called Punto Simply is a super market a bit expensive but with quality stuff. Then turn right and cross the bridge. In the other end of the bridge there is a little grocery store that also has products on a boat by the bridge. Fruits and vegetable there are very good.

La Salute (Saint Mary of Health) is a minor basilica. In the XVII century, when the plague was killing almost 1/3 of the population and the praying/processions at/to San Rocco and San Lorenzo were not enough they decided to build this new church. On nov. 21st people still go to the Festa della Salute with a parade from San Marco to La Salute on a special pontoon bridge. They thank the deliverance of the plague in the city.

If you arrived to this point you should have realized that Venice is not exactly a green city, green in the sense that the plants you find are on the cornices and terraces of the houses. The Giardini were built by Napoleon who made dry some meters in order to spcifcly make some public gardens. It is now part of the Venice Biennale.

Former shipyards and armories it showed the power the Venetian region had on navigation and military issues. Now as one of the main venues of the Biennale di Venezia, shows the power and influences Venice still has in different artistic disciplines: visual arts, architecture, theater, music, dance and cinema. The Art Venice Biennale (for Visual Arts/Contemporary Art) is the oldest event and has been taking place, every two years, since 1895. At the Fondamenta Arsenale two towers are visible. These towers give to the sestiere the name of Castello, which starts right after the Dodge's Palace. Follow the Fondamenta Arsenale, pass the towers, the church of San Martino, Campiello Gorne, Calle Magno, Calle Dona Castello, Campiello Fianco la Chiesa (left), Fondamenta del Cristo, Campo de la Celestia (right), Corte del Cimitero, Corte da Ponte untill you arrive to Biblioteca San Francesco della Vignia and the church of San Francecso de la Vigna.
