DavidREssexUK's City Tips

  • Venice is easily walkable but a 2,3 or more day ticket for the Vaporetto adds another dimension to your stay. Individual vaporetto trips are very expensive otherwise.

This charming, light apartment is just footsteps away from St Marks Square but a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of the tourists. It is situated on a canal which carries both gondolas, water taxis and the day to day water traffic serving hotels and commercial enterprises. The small balcony allows you sit with a coffee or glass of wine and both watch and hear the canal traffic passing beneath. The apartment is small but beautifully self contained and well managed by the owner and his representatives. A most welcome alternative to hotel accommodation

One of the most iconic viewpoints of Venice. This is one stop away from the Zaccaria vaporetto stop (No 1) and a great alternative to climbing the Campanile di San Marco. In comparison it is very tranquil. The views are spectacular in all directions. Take the lift to the top. There is no pressure to hurry

The most amazing book shop ever. You don't have to be a book lover to appreciate this place. It's just unique and crammed to the rafters with books. A gondola, also used as a book case, is just one of the quirks. Walk out the back, climb the "steps" made out of books and view the canal behind

This was the 3rd hotel we had stayed in in Venice and by far the best experience. The rooms are above average in size. The hotel is very welcoming and clean. The staff are very helpful and friendly. Breakfast is more than adequate. Situated in the Campo Santa Maria - a lively square which also has a small market each day. Yet another unique part of Venice. Cross over the Accademia bridge and you are aware of not only the tourists but the students also. As you walk further in you will notice far fewer tourists. There are many art galleries and artists painting. The whole area is much more tranquil and you can easily escape . Be sure to visit the boat yard where gondolas are both made and repaired . Make your way south and walk along the Zattere - beautiful on a sunny day as the sun sparkles on the water.

St Mary of the Friars is an immense and imposing structure from the exterior and rather nondescript. However step, inside and the church comes alive . There is a strict policy regarding not taking photographs. One can only wander and wonder at the treasures surrounding you and can easily spend a few hours marvelling at your surroundings. Of particular note are the tombs of Titian and Canova Our visit was particularly ethereal as there was a huge thunderstorm over head. Lightening struck the church causing a temporary power failure.

What can one say about this iconic landmark? It is the place to go and to experience the whole atmosphere. By far the best time to visit is very early morning - about 7am just as the City is waking up and before the guided tours and masses of tourists descend. Equally an evening visit has much to offer . The lights and music from the cafes is yet another unmissable experience. If you can afford to then treat yourself to acoffee or cocktail and sit and listen to the music but it isn't cheap. Otherwise stand and listen to the musicians. Whilst the square represents Venice it is a great idea to wander away and see other areas of the city. It is by no means the be all and end all of sights. There are many restaurants around this area but they are charging high prices and poor menus. Move away and find far more interesting places to eat

The second must visit place in Venice. Always very busy but the place to take a picture of the Grand Canal. The area is full of souvenir shops, some of which are overpriced and not representative of Venice. There is an interesting Murano glass shop on the St Marks side of the bridge. The gateway to the fantastic Rialto fish and vegetable market. The whole area is alive with boats typifying how goods etc are transported around Venice. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through Campo San Stenfano and head towards the Accademia bridge and your link to Dorsoduro. You will see the mix of tourists and students here. The view of the Grand Canal in both directions is well known and gives an idea of the number of water craft plying in both directions. The view down to Santa Maria della Salute is probably one of the most well known of Venice but the water activity always makes it something special. This doesn't have the grandeur of the Rialto Bridge but it also doesn't have the Rialto souvenir shops!!!! If you want a picture from the history books then get the camera out here

An absolute hidden gem of a Reataurant. You might struggle to find it but will be rewarded if you achieve it. The restaurant occupies a small square with delightful outdoor tables. The staff are very accommodating and helpful with their suggestions. The portions are very generous and, for Venice, well priced. If you behave you will be offered a complimentary limoncello after your meal
