Liverpool has a huge range of different eateries in its city centre alone, and that's not counting all the wonderful restaurants that lie a little further afield. This is a guide to my favourite ten chilled-out, friendly places to eat that won't break the bank.

Alison C's City Tips

  • An all-day bus ticket is great value if you're planning to use the bus more than once.
  • Don't ignore places outside the city centre, Lark Lane and Allerton Road are great for coffee, cake and lunch.
  • Tipping is discretionary and based on quality of service - 10% is customary.
  • Bold Street Coffee
    Restaurants (Cafe, British)

    Alison C Says:

Bold Street Coffee is a brilliant independent café in Liverpool, with two to three different filter coffees available all the time, and staff who know their stuff. The breakfast menu is small but effective, and the cakes taste as great as they look. You can come in for a quick bacon sandwich or linger over lunch and dessert, but if you love coffee, it's not to be missed.

    Tips
    • It gets very busy, but if you're a coffee fiend, it's worth getting a takeaway or using the bench outside.
    • If you loved your filter coffee, you can buy the beans to take home, complete with info about the farm they come from.

It's fair to say that Milo Lounge can be a bit hit-and-miss. The main courses lack a little something and ordering at the bar can get pretty hectic when it's busy. However, there's a great friendly atmosphere in here, which the staff contribute to by being helpful and chatty at all times. It's a wonderful place to while away a couple of hours with cake and coffee, and if you're looking for something more filling, you can't go wrong with the buttermilk pancake stack.

Siren is the café serving The Women's Organisation, which helps to support Liverpool women in business, but luckily for the rest of us it is open to the public too. As well as offering great breakfast and lunch, Siren is also available for outside catering and weddings. If it's available, take a trip to the top floor to see the view - there is a deck from which you can see most of the city centre and beyond.

Value for money sandwiches and excellent service are Lox and Caper's stock in trade! This is a great alternative to the very busy franchises that are prevalent in this area of the city centre, and plenty of buses stop right outside. What's not to like?

This Lebanese street food joint covers all the bases: serious meat eaters as well as vegetarians and vegans will all find something to enjoy here. It gets busy but that just ramps up the energy even higher. Prices range from just a few pounds for a humble shawarma wrap, to well into the double digits for platters. There is a great choice of mezze, and their baklava is just right.

Tucked away in Liverpool's suburbs, this is easy to miss for visitors and locals alike, which is a real shame, as Cooper's is a labour of love devoted to cosiness, cake, and classic tea. This is great if you're alone and want somewhere to relax with a book, as the quiet setting gives it a chilled out atmosphere - a welcome change from the hipster vibe of many city centre cafés.

A consistently well-rated tapas restaurant that offers a more upmarket spin on classic dishes, as well as a solid lunch deal with an extensive menu to choose from. The staff are great at recommending something new, and their egg and straw fries dish (chorizo optional) is becoming well-known among the foodie community.

Frederik's earns its place on this guide due to its ability to be all things to all people. Some people know it as the best breakfast in Liverpool, others love its quality cocktails and utility as a venue. For me, the deciding factor is their commitment to customer service, underscored by their well-thought-out approach to allergies. With an allergen menu, vegan dishes, and coeliac pizza dough available on request, this is a great place to take your fussier friends.

Everybody has their own favourite Chinese restaurant, and this is mine. Secreted in a quiet suburb that has great bus links to the city centre with a fantastic sweetshop close by, don't be fooled by Overseas' humble appearance. This is truly mighty Chinese food, with the best sweet chilli sauce you'll ever taste, homemade on the premises. The service is quiet and unobtrusive, but staff will give thoughtful suggestions on what's worth trying. For my money, it's one of the 'casseroles,' that, not unlike the restaurant, is more complex and interesting than it first sounds.

I have a friend from Washington D.C. who calls Free State Kitchen's classic 'the only burger that makes me homesick.' I think that's a solid recommendation. The burgers are cooked medium as standard, with just enough variations to keep it interesting, without detracting from the main event. The chocolate and peanut butter sundae is also a treat you shouldn't deny yourself.
