Seeing Cap Town in a few days

85%
Found this guide helpful

I was with 2 friends to Cape Town to visit their most important sights in a few days. We stayed at Victoria and Alfred Waterfront Hotel, a very nice hotel at the Waterfront tourist area. At the Waterfront were plenty of restaurants with delicious food to reasonable prices. We liked Cap Town very much and the people were friendly.

leffex's City Tips

  • The best way to travel between the museums and other sights is to take a taxi. When we were 3 persons, the taxi was rather cheap, 120 ZAR, about 8 Euro. Tipping about 10-15 %.

I stayed with a friend at the Victoria & Alfred Hotel. We had a nice view over Table Mountain and the harbor. The hotel was nice and the staff was kind and helpful. The whole area, The Waterfront is a quiet tourist area with nice hotels and good restaurants, but isn’t the real Cape Town. The real town is out there somewhere.

When you enter the Secunde’s house and begin to explore the William Fehr Collection you find a lot of Dutch furniture from 17th century and Cape Town made items from 18th century, but also English things from 19th century. One of the oddest furniture is “The Sedan Chair”, which was used to transport member of the wealthier families of Cape Town, possibly woman only. The carriers of this chair were slaves from Cape Town, who came from Indonesia, India and Madagascar.

The South African Museum is the oldest and largest museum on the sub-continent. The Museum is housed in an elegant late-Victorian building which was opened in the 1880's and has been enlarged with modern extensions. The ambience of the exhibits, which range from fossil footprints to trance-inspired San rock paintings, lends a unique atmosphere to performances and other events held in the Museum. A very impressive museum and the collections are displayed in a modern way.

The garden was formally established in 1652 by Dutch settlers who sought to establish a victualing station to service and re-provision spice-trading sailing ships on the long sea route to the east. In 1892, the Municipality took over the Public Garden, and in 1898, incorporated the Avenue and the Paddocks into it. For the first time the garden was open to all as a right and not a courtesy. A nice small garden.
