Vancouver is one of North America's top destinations for foodies, with a diverse selection of food from many countries on offer, including Ethiopia and Japan. My food connoisseur friends and I enjoy sampling the full range of restaurants in the city, from food carts to fine dining, and this guide features our favorite places to eat based on flavor, quality, uniqueness and atmosphere. Vancouver is a very eco-conscious city, so this guide also includes restaurants that offer good vegetarian options, local ingredients, and seasonal menus.

    Mel C Says:

I've tried countless restaurants while growing up in Vancouver and East is East is consistently among my favorite places to indulge in food. The meals are made using a delicious blend of herbs, spices, and local organic ingredients. The founders escaped Afghanistan during the Soviet war and relocated to India, where they adopted the country's language, culture, and food. Their passion for healthy eating, environmental sustainability, and excellent service is reflected in the food and decor. On top of all this, world-class musicians play at the restaurant, so the atmosphere is incredible.

    • Some nights feature belly dancing shows. Contact the restaurant to find out which days they're on.
    • You can get a free sample of chai tea before ordering a full cup.

    Mel C Says:

You can find a Japanese restaurant every few blocks in some parts of Vancouver, but if you don't want to gamble on an unknown place, simply head straight to Guu. There are eight locations, with the original 'izakaya' outpost downtown on Thurlow Street. Izakayas, casual Japanese food and drink locales, date back to the Edo period (1600-1900) when people (predominantly single men at the time) shared drinks, food, and their life stories at these bars. Expect a line of visitors outside, waiting anxiously for an authentic Japanese food experience. And don't you dare try this restaurant without sampling the sake!

While many of us go to restaurants we love because of the familiarity of favorite dishes, if your food cravings are constantly on the search for new flavors, the Farmer's Apprentice is the spot for you. The cuisine is experimental and the menu changes regularly, depending on what is local and seasonal. Go with a group and order a variety of dishes to make the most of this diverse culinary experience.

The Naam has always been a favorite of mine for its delicious food, generous portions, and great prices. You'll find this award-winning, 24-hour, 100% vegetarian- and vegan-friendly restaurant packed with people, and it's not unusual to find patrons enjoying a meal at 2am. While the service may be slow at times, the food is well worth the wait. The owners value healthy eating, so everything is made with fresh ingredients, including free-range eggs, organic Yukon Gold potatoes, organic blueberries, and more. Relish your meal here in a cozy atmosphere with live music.

People always rave about the Belgian waffles at Cafe Medina, so it’s an excellent choice for breakfast or lunch. But do expect a long wait, especially on weekends, as everyone is keen to sink their teeth into the very flavorful meals here, and particularly the waffle toppings! This is not just a restaurant that serves great food — the staff takes pride in 'feeding the soul of each and every guest' with sustenance that's cooked and served with intention, care, and love.

    Harambe
    Restaurants (African, Ethiopian)
    See more photos
    Mel C Says:

Harambe is a fantastic Ethiopian restaurant that accommodates both veggie and meat lovers. It's especially notable for the great blend of spices and herbs that each dish is cooked with. Harambe is different from a Western-style place because the food is designed to be shared — the restaurant name actually means 'all pull together' in Swahili — and don't expect to eat with knives and forks here either. Here, you pick up your food with the traditional 'injera' bread, which is like a soft and spongy crepe. While the bread is not especially flavorful in itself, it balances well with the spiced items. This restaurant began small with just a few tables, and soon expanded to feed the growing number of customers eager to experience authentic Ethiopian fare.

If you want to try a lesser-known food gem in the city, head to Salmon n' Bannock. There is a strong First Nations community in British Columbia, and part of its rich and complex culture is reflected in the food, which is prepared carefully to fine taste and with quality ingredients. The restaurant is small, intimate, and has a welcoming atmosphere that feels more like a home than a business. Salmon is a valued fish in British Columbia, and is prepared in several mouth-watering ways at this restaurant. Plus, the place is unique because it's filled with art made in First Nations indigenous communities.

    Chau Veggie Express
    Restaurants (Asian, Vietnamese)
    Mel C Says:

Vietnamese food is not generally famous for being vegetarian or vegan friendly, which is one of several characteristics that makes CHAU Veggiexpress so unique. While many Vietnamese eateries in town specialize in the popular pho noodle dishes, CHAU offers a huge range of meals, all packed with fresh ingredients, including seasonal vegetables and herbs, and served in decent portions. The service is fast and friendly, and unlike many Asian restaurants, CHAU Veggiexpress also serves desserts — almost all of which are gluten-free and vegan-friendly.
