Would this be a good place to take my boyfriend for his birthday? he is from Chicago- he is turning 23
Absolutely. Galena is a great place to go at any age. I would recommend that you stay as close to town if not in the town at a bed and breakfast. Otherwise you will have to drive to a motel, most of which are on Rt 20 both east and west of the downtown area. Reason I say this is that if you imbibe too much, staying in town allows you to walk to your overnight accommodations. Have fun.
This time of the year all the Vineyards have been harvested so the hours of operation may be limited at best. They still have a tasting room and retail shop in the town of Galena itself, which is nice. I do not know if you ever been to a wine tasting before, but you have to remember the key word is tasting. You roughly only get an 1oz. or 2oz. to taste from 5 or 6 different wines they produce, you do not get full glasses of wine. There is a fee involved also for any of the tasting no matter what winery you may go to. Beside does your boyfriend even like wine? If it is his birthday, this might not be what he is looking to do.
I would definitely take him, there is an awesome main street. We went for our sons 30th and the distillery was his favorite. Great whiskeys and fun games. We also spent the evening on main street had great food and loved miss kitty's for live entertainment and drinks.
There are wineries - wine-tastings, there's a distillery and tastings and a brewery and tastings! I'm not sure about this time of year for the wineries but I'm sure the tasting rooms in town are still open and there is all sorts of things to do winter and summer. I prefer warm weather but I'm a wimp. Check out the packages listed for ideas!

If the weather is nice, it's awesome. I'm not sure how it would be currently. The other thing you might want to check out is the Fever river, scooter wine tour. You rent scooters in downtown Galena and ride them to the winery
