The hotel offered to book a round trip taxi for RM500, it took about an hour to get there and the taxi driver dropped us off in the village next to the car park. We walked 10 minutes to the ticket office. Tickets were RMB150 each.

Hotel would have offered a hotel car and driver for about RMB1100 but recommended that we take a taxi.

Don’t bother with a guide, you are just going to walk into pits 1,2 and 3 and take photos!

HI, I replied but I think it might have been lost. ALWAYS check viator wherever you go. They were bought by Trip Advisor recently, and offer professional, reasonably priced tours everywhere, including Calgary. I see they have tours in Xian and to Terra Cotta. If you are a do-it-yourself, and not on a group tour, this is the first place to check. Good luck.

My family used a private tour guide and driver, booked by our Los Angeles agent,

Aviva Sharon at New Act travel

1925 Century Park E #1150, Los Angeles, CA 90067

Phone: (310) 201-0808Contact Aviva for further information.

Our guide and driver were excellent and our visit was stress-free. We were a group of 6. My daughter-in-law, Sarah Sangmeister knows Aviva through her sister Jennifer who travels to Asia frequently.

Good luck,

Barbara McElnea

Travelling to China, you will undoubtedly be dealing with a Travel Agency for your accommodations. I would book the tour you want with the same travel agency who will farm it out to one of the big tour groups in China. Waiting to book through the hotel is not a good bet for availability and logistical reasons. You will have a choice of a private or group tour; if at all possible, the Terra cotta warriors tour is best done in a very small group to avoid the rush of several persons at the same time adding to the madness of the masses already vying at the exhibit for choice picture taking vantage points.

I'm not a tour guide either. But see the complaint about this property, to wit, a member of the desk staff sent them to an expensive taxi, which dropped them off at wrong location, so they got suckered into hiring a tour guide who did a perfunctory tour followed by a mandatory shopping tour, with hard sells and commissions for the guide.

The hotel replied, we have a travel agency in the lobby. My reply is, wherever you go, ALWAYS check Viator, which was acquired by Trip Advisor a few years ago, as they have excellent tours with great guides pretty much everywhere in the world, maybe even Calgary (I was a US Customs Inspector in Toronto in '80).

I am personally not a tour guide. I did use a tour service when I was there. I planned a package that included

Air, Hotel, tour and two lunches (breakfast came with the hotel stay). Our tour was private, they (one driver and one guide) picked us up and drove us everywhere. Evenings were on our own. Our home hotel was in Shanghai so we traveled from there to Xian then to Beijing then back to Shanghai.
