Hi William l am surprised that you are not impressed by this site. I visited it couple of years ago and although l have also been to Luxor and Aswan artefacts l find it jut as well interesting to visit this site. May be l was lucky as one of the site Egyptologists showed me around and even showed me some artefacts from other parts of Alexandria that were brought for exhibition to this site.
The site is not that impressive if you are looking it compared to other sites in Egypt. The reason to see it is because it is one of the best sites of its kind, so you see it to have seen it and to be able to put other things in context. If you are short on time then skip it. If you are really short on time skip Alexandria all together. Aswan and Luxor have far more to offer.
A little research, before visiting the place, helps a lot!
A little cleaning and a lot more respect to THEIR OWN history and perhaps their origin will make this historical site a lot more attractive.
Our Guide Shri.Mohammad of South Sinai Tours and Travels was also lot more enthusiastic and committed to promote Egypt as an attractive tourist destination.
Having visited both the north and south tourist monuments, I dare say that Alexandria needs an overnight stay to soak in the Mediterranean ambiance and enjoy a laid back vacation which the locals seem to do.
All said and done, any foreign vacation is made memorable by the people of the host country.
If you are thrust with a group of opinionated, lazy vegetarians who can not look beyond their nose and appreciate the culture , cuisine and the core value system of the host country, forget the vacation... it is going to turn out to be a totally different experience.
If possible, get deep into the western desert on a fully guided tour and soak in the Bedouin way of life.
You will appreciate the desert sunrise. It is beautiful beyond words.
