I stayed in Mercure Hotel in Martiniplaza, it's a 15 min walk from the city center, but it's very well maintained, not extremely pricey and has a good loyalty program. I would advise for business trips, for touristic trips you may want to stay in a more central hotel
We stayed in the Martini hotel, perfect location and lovely rooms at a great rate.
We stayed in Fantastic B&B Guesthouse Vannacht it was v central beautifully appointed with an incredibly generous breakfast - sadly not on trip advisor. Also Hampshire hotel was very nice and had amazing breakfasts, nice bar and walking distance of the town.
The Schimmelpenninck Huys would be my first choice. Check their site for pictures; it definitely is not main stream. This is a friendly place with a good restaurant and a very pleasant atmosphere. Parking is available on reservation. Rooms have their own charm. Breakfast is good. Since Groningen is a small town, most attractions are at a walkable distance from here. If not, the busses run frequently.
Try to avoid the University Hotel: the rooms are narrow and over heated without ventilation or airco. Breakfast is "cheap". Also the street is very noisy during the night with bars and smokers on the terrace.
My wife and I stayed at the Hampshire Plaza Hotel, located on the outskirts of Groningen, because:
. we had a good rate, incl. excellent breakfast from the website HotelSpecials.nl
. free parking: we arrived by car from Amsterdam
. 10 min. walk from the hotel to bus stop (2 different bus lines available), while we left our car at the hotel free of charge parking lot
. both buses stop at the Central Station (Hoofdstation) in Groningen, just opposite the Groninger Museum (1 minute walk).
We left from the hotel in the morning, spent the whole day in the city sightseeing and after dinner we returned to the hotel.
This worked out great for us.

I've stayed at Hampshire City Hotel.
+good location - no need of public transport - right in the city center,
+coffee/tea available free
-standard rooms need redecoration.
In overall I can recommend this hotel. Stayed there for 7 days on business trip in September. 4 stars it is not. NH City Hotel might be also a good choice. But it is more expensive and this is really a quiet location with all advantages of old city center.
