Given that i am a 20 something white male from north America, how safe is this area? Also I have heard not such great things about the location (or paris in general to be quite honest) should I even bother spending money in this city?
The Parisians can be a but aloof and will want you to speak French. But I'm a white British male and encountered no real problems. Paris us big and cosmopolitan. Go. Enjoy. The Alane was great.
I stayed in this hotel with my 16 year old daughter, so two women, one very young, one not so young! We went out for dinner both evenings and travelled on the buses. All absolutely fine, obviously any city has the usual potential hazards (traffic, pick pockets, etc.) but I felt completely safe. Learn a few words of French, be nice to people, stick to main roads/well lit areas at night, don't get drunk, don't get into arguments, don't flash cash or valuables and you will be fine. One major benefit of European cities over the USA - no guns! Paris is a beautiful city and you should definitely visit it while you're young, and on a regular basis thereafter.
