The ship is on par with all other Viking ships. It was built in 2014, but it is immaculately maintained. It has the appearance of a newly finished ship. The ship crew and the hotel staff were all helpful and friendly. They all were in good spirits as we were with them during a difficult time due to the Danube River flood in September 2024. The meals were all freshly prepared and selection was great for each meal.

Words aren’t enough to describe our Danube River cruise on board Viking Ingvi! Speechless 💗 What an amazing experience. Onboard we were treated with first class service, exceptional cuisine so meticulously prepared and described each evening by the Head Chef. Entertainment by onboard classic pianist, Blondie was amazing. No pressure to join in fun quiz evenings - however we did - great fun! Dancing, cocktails, meeting the guests - just 180 - so we felt more relaxed. We got to know some lovely guests and more particularly, a couple from England who have now made contact. We would do another Viking cruise. Thank you to all the staff, program director and tour guides. 🥰🥂

Viking Ingvi – Danube Waltz Cruise – Budapest to Passau Nov. 9 to Nov.16, 2022 – Description of the ship: Main Deck – Standard Staterooms 100–125 Middle Deck – Entrance to ship - Staterooms 200–237 - The Restaurant – Kitchen - Guest Services – Shop Upper Deck - Staterooms 301–341 - Aquavit Terrace - The Lounge/Bar - The Library Sun Deck - Sun Deck - Walking Track - Herb Garden There is an elevator from the Middle Deck to Upper Deck only. The Sun Deck and the Main (lower) Deck are only accessible by stairs. The Main Deck floor is below the water line, and that is where our cabin was located. There are 13 steps from the Middle Deck to the Main Deck. We were able to check into our cabin (#107) on the Main Deck slightly before the stated 3 pm availability time. On the back of the cabin door is a full-length mirror and two hooks for hanging clothes or jackets. Next to the door jamb is the temperature control for the cabin, and below that is the room card receptacle. You must insert your room card to turn on the lights. Upon removing the card, all the lights in the cabin go out, except for the bathroom and closet lights. The cabin is very compact, but the space is well utilized. The exterior wall and wall to the bathroom are magnetic. There are two windows with a shelf just above water line. Viking does not put a top sheet on the bed, although you can ask for one. There is a duvet that is not too heavy. There are two nightstands, each with a bottom shelf and pull-out tray for additional space. The queen bed is two twin beds pushed together. Each side has an individual, adjustable reading lamp as well as a conventional lamp. In the bedroom ceiling are 6 recessed light, plus one in the foyer. There 3 speakers, one smoke detector and 2 sprinklers. The electric outlet on the left side of the bed is European 220 volt and the outlet on right side of bed is a USA 110 volt. Bring adapters if you want to utilize all the outlets. Opposite the bed on the desk wall there are 2 regular-size drawers (one contains the hair dryer) and one deep drawer; a refrigerator; a mirror, and a flat screen TV. Under the mirror there are two electric outlets – USA 110 and European 220. Under the TV are again two outlets – USA 110 and European 220, however, the European outlet is being used to charge the tour receivers – also there is a volume control for the ceiling speakers and USB charging point. There is a bench chair under the desk. On the desk/counter are provided an ice bucket; glasses; and a water bottle, which is replenished as needed and is complimentary. The closet on the left contains 4 deep shelves plus a shelf for the safe (you set your own combination). There is just one hanging closet next to the door, which is about 2 feet wide. The cabin floor is carpeted, and the bathroom floor is not. However, the bathroom has a heated floor that you can control. You can add dry clothes on the floor if needed. There is a sliding door to enter the bathroom. There is a small sink with two glass shelves and two water glasses mounted on the wall above it. There is also an outlet just for shaver. Under the sink, there is a bottom shelf that runs the full length with the night light underneath it, which stays on all the time. There is a toilet paper dispenser, tissue dispenser, and a sanitary napkin dispenser. There is a shorter middle shelf. Above the toilet there are two hooks and above that is a shelf where bath towels are stored and has bars for hanging wash clothes. The shower has an interesting design – the glass wall is angled, giving a wider space at the end where the shower controls are located. The shower entrance consists of two doors that open inward and outward. The shower has a hand-held shower head on a bracket. The pressure is adequate, and the water is hot. One door has two hooks for bath towels. There are 4 Freyja Collection squeeze bottles: shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and body lotion, which are replenished as needed. There is a soap bar by Freyja as well. You have washcloths, hand towels, and bath towels.

We really enjoyed our first cruise experience with Viking. The service was fantastic, food and drinks were excellent and the staff was very friendly and attentive. We loved the onboard entertainment and have great memories of everyone. Ship Captain, hotel manager and Program Manger were exceptional. Also, the shore excursion at every port were very good.

Our most recent and 3rd trip with Viking; Danube Waltz (Christmas Markets) turned out to be a mere shadow of our other experiences. We have done the Romantic Danube and Basel to Amsterdam Rhine cruise, both for the Christmas Markets. We noticed a distinct difference from our first cruise to our second and thought that might have been just that particular cruise but our 3rd cruise has confirmed that there is an even larger slide in quality than we thought. The experience this time left us with the feeling that we were just part of the tourist meat grinder and just another point of revenue for the corporate giant rather than the personalized feeling we experienced prior. Our hotel director proudly pointed out that Viking is the largest river cruise operator in the world and is aiming to take over the 7 seas as well. Perhaps they have grown too big and too fast? It seems they may have forgotten how they got there as a small river cruise company some years ago? On our first cruise 5 years ago, we were treated like royalty, as if Viking were proud to have us choose them for our cruise. The staff were nothing short of amazing and nothing was too much trouble for management. As expected, the captain was seen talking with guests regularly and everyone was made to feel very warm and welcome. On the second cruise 2 years later, there was a different sense of belonging, especially from the management of the ship. The captain was rarely seen and the senior staff were certainly not engaging, even though we had booked the Explorer Suite. This time, while the day to day crew were excellent, from management it felt like passengers were just getting in the way to a great degree. We spoke with one passenger who told us that the hotel manager had berated her and wagged his finger at her due to her being a diabetic and needing some juice during the fire drill. It seemed completing the fire drill was more important than having a passenger potentially go into diabetic shock which would create a real emergency. It also seemed like there was more emphasis on selling shore excursions and “your next cruise” than the last 2 times. I was also very disappointed at the lack of knowledge from the Activities Director about certain places, such as not knowing that the Christmas market at Krems didn’t open until 2 hours after we were supposed to leave because pretty much all of Krems is closed on Sunday. I couldn’t help but think that surely Viking, the largest river cruise company in the world would have all of this in a database somewhere, or stop marketing this cruise as a Christmas Market Cruise? The capper was when we found out that Viking had changed their “gratuities” from being your choice of how much you gave different staff members to a “mandatory fee” which will suck 105 Euros (about $117US) per passenger. That’s around $22,000 per trip going to Viking and I bet the woman who got yelled at by the hotel manager wouldn’t tip him if she had the option. We have always tipped and gone over and above for those who excelled and this time was no exception but perhaps this change is also a contributor to the lower value delivery. On a positive note, we did go on a paid optional excursion tour to a farmhouse just outside of Linz where we were able to get to know a true Austrian farmer and his wife, bake some bread and visit a Schnapps distillery before returning to the farmhouse to eat the bread and partake of a traditional meal. This was probably the best shore excursion we have ever been on and everyone else agreed that it was an amazing experience. We found out shortly afterward that Viking is looking at dropping or reducing that excursion, no doubt in favor of force-feeding passengers into the tourist meat grinder. We had planned that this might be our last river cruise before looking at Ocean options by Viking however as a result of this cruise showing a decided downward trend, we will reconsider our options there as well.
