Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This was our first time cruising with the Silversea cruise line. It is the luxury side of the Royal Caribbean family of cruise lines. Prior to this we had one other encounter with another luxury cruise line - Regent - and for the most part Silversea was comparable. Our suite was large enough that we were not falling over each other to move around in it, the bed was a queen size and comfortable but, like a few others, had a central ridge that slanted off on the sides. One of the perks were the bath amenities - Bvlgari shower wash, shampoo and conditioner as well as body lotion. That is the creme-de-la-creme of those items; the towels were bath sheets, the largest we have ever had on a cruise, even larger that Regent's. The choices for the included excursions were adequate and compared favorably with Regent's although we did choose one paid for excursion over the free ones. There was one excursion that we do not recommend for anyone that goes on the New England cruise from NYC - Quebec City and that is the one that goes to Kennebunkport - we spent 3 hours of a 4.5 hour tour on the bus. The staff on board ship were incredible - attentive, polite, catering to your every whim, remembering your name even. Our suite had it's shared butler who was all you could ask for. He did all that was asked of him as well as anticipating our wants on occasion. Now for the second most important item on any cruise - the food. Their 'specialty' restaurants were very good. There were three only one of which we had to pay for: La Terraza was an Italian theme at dinner but was the buffet for breakfast and lunch, The Grill was their version of a steakhouse but used hot rocks to grill the meat tableside (allowing for very precise control over the doneness), and finally was Le Dame, their French restaurant (this is the one that wasn't free. The main dining room meals were good but not great (Regent's were better) and selection was limited. The main menu was the same for three days with only a limited selection changing daily. All in all it was an enjoyable cruise, we would give them 4.25 stars overall and, if they have an itinerary that we would cruise with Silversea again.

We booked with Silverseas expecting first class service and customer care that exceeded competitors. We found that it was, politely, basic. The staff on the trip tried hard but clearly Silverseas is cost cutting on their hiring and staffing with novice and junior people. We found out the hard way that the way they are able to hire such junior people and keep their payroll low has to do with their status as a "foreign country". During our cruise, the weather was so rough that my wife became ill for days and we finally decided to have her leave the ship after 4 days. We were told she could not even though we were in the United States and she is a US citizen. After explaining to the senior staff that I was making a statement, not asking a question, they fined us $1000 for leaving a foreign country without touching foreign soil. Yes the ship is a country extension. Despite providing extensive information on costs, flights, etc, TinLeg insurance and Silverseas both declined a partial refund for medical reasons. We followed the guidance of ship staff for how to handle the illness and were told that since a doctor couldn't certify the diagnosis we were out of luck. And this was after taking one of the ships best suites. Just want to warn travelers (a) about the service degradation at Silverseas, and (b) expose the farce that insurers, like Tinleg, get away with when you actually file a claim against your policy. Shameful and certainly discourage you from using either company as the costs are high and the service is low.

While the cruise itself was wonderful, the obligations and promises by SilverSea were not kept. To elaborate, they advertise that they provide door-to door limousine service.-My daughter and her husband were picked up at their home and my husband, son, and myself were picked up at our condo and all delivered to the airport but upon our return none of us were picked up and taken home, thus, we Ubered home. We were promised reimbursements but have not received them so far(Cruise was in July and it is now November). We also were told that we would be given shipboard credits but upon checking out we did not receive that either and still have not gotten a credit to our cards. The shipboard credits were for the horrible business class connections we were booked on by their flight team. I would probably NOT rebook on SilverSea Cruise Lines if this is not resolved and would not let them handle our pre and post travel. They are not very good at it!

New ship is beautiful. Excellent butler, housekeeping and bartender staff. Food servers have no training. Dined at La Dame (French restaurant with supplemental charge). Served soup with garnish only in bowl, no liquid. Ordered two fine wines. White was tasted and poured. Red was tasted but we had to ask for red wine glasses after main course was already on the table. Neither wine was refilled just left on table for us to self-serve. Voiced our dissatisfaction and returned a second time. Service was much better. They even decanted the red wine this time (same selection). Poolside - ordered a drink. Waited over one hour. Finally asked a different server to please bring drink. Ordered a Sausage-Mushroom Pizza. Waited over 30 minutes to get a lukewarm pizza delivered which had no sausage, just mushroom. Obviously was sitting out waiting for a server to pick up. Had to get up and walk to bar to get my own drink since no server was checking on our table. La Terrazzo - Missing bread and butter plate at one of our place settings. Waiter tried to laugh it off at the table. Same waiter poured sparkling water as requested but then did refills with still water mixing the two waters in our glasses. Have sailed with Silversea before and service was excellent start to finish. This food service was problematic throughout most of the cruise. A huge disappointment compared to past experience. Not likely to sail with them again.

Having booked our Alaskan cruise in 2020, and had it rolled over twice, due to Covid, we were finally to get our long awaited trip. 24 hours before we were due to depart from Vancouver, we were notified that departure would be delayed and would depart a day later than scheduled.. No reason given and although told that ther would be Silverseas reps at our hotel, the only people wer Fairmont staff who had been told less than the passengers. Before embarkation our various forms were checked by 4 different Silverseas staff, who individually checked and initialled all the forms. Why this could not be done by 1 member of staff we weren’t told. On embarkation we were held for an hour before being allowed to find our suite. We were told that the suites were nit ready, which was obviously not the case as the ship had docked the previous afternoon and even if the returning passengers has disembarked early in the morning, to be kept waiting until 4 o’clock seemed to be disproportionate. Our butler failed to explain things to us and we had to request our drink preference rather than being asked. The staff aboard were friendly but a high proportion of them, including senior staff members had poor command of English, and given the high number of passengers were English speakers, this was very disappointing. In all but one of the restaurants ( which we chose not to use), the service was slow, inefficient , the food tended to be cold or tepid and if you wanted anything other than the cheapest wine, you had to ask for it and were told that the staff had to check whether they were available. On one occasion, my request for a certain wine was denied ( as it was a premium wine) but was readily served it the following day. Because of the day lost at the start of the cruise, 2 Port stops were. Cancelled and 1 was replaced by an inferior port stop. We had 2 of our booked tours cancelled and were offered a non-refundable $300 each as a form of compensation. This was derisory as the cancelled tours amounted to more than that. While I appreciate that the delay in starting the cruise, was reputedly due to a failure or breakdown of the ship, the obvious lack of concern by the parent company for their “esteemed guests” was nit acceptable. Not one of the guests which we have spoken to has anything good to stay about our collective experiences and have all said that they would never travel with the company again. A very expensive mistake to have made. We took this cruise because we had friends who had experienced Silverseas and recommended them. I, however, would advise caution to anybody contemplating this cruise.
