We have travelled with Scenic previously and the itinerary appealed to us. This truly was an excellent 5 star experience. The places we visited were all interesting and as Scenic offer a range of excursions and activities all included in the price, there was something for everyone in each location. To give a flavour - you could borrow an e-bike or join a guided bike ride; go truffle hunting; visit a chocolate factory, and sample the wares; learn to paint watercolour or join the chef for cookery lessons. We opted to go wine tasting on one occasion although there were other opportunities to do so. Or you could simply relax in the many locations as the ship docked centrally on most occasions and you could do your own thing. The food was exceptional and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful. Scenic also have what they call Scenic Enrich and we enjoyed a wonderful meal and musical performance in the Popes Palace in Avignon, plus a choir recital in the 17th century Trinity chapel in Lyon, both provided just for our tour. Can highly recommend

On our Scenic Luxury Cruise Lines "Spectacular South of France" Rhone River cruise in April, 2023 our ship collided with a cargo barge. Scenic states they had no fault in the collision, but it was after that unfortunate incident that Scenic showed its true colors. I will try to keep this as brief as possible; The collision caused an extreme "jolt" and several people had minor injuries and several cabins (including ours) had glassware fly off shelves and shatter. My brother was still in bed and was pelted with broken glass. Fortunately, he was not injured. The ship proceeded to the nearest docking port, a small town on The Rhone River. We were stuck there for 4 days out of a 10 day cruise until French authorities cleared the boat to sail. However the clearance was to only sail back to our starting point of Lyon. We missed out on cruising about 150 miles of the Rhone and were unable to dock in Tournon, Avignon & Arles. Scenic did bus us to excursions. Some of these bus trips were over 2 hours each direction. So you would drive for 2+ hours, stop for an hour and then 2+ hours back to the boat. Not only were we "stuck", but for some reason the ship service levels disappeared. Prior to the collision the food and beverage service was great. After the collision you would wait for a waiter and/or for your order for an unacceptable timeframe. It became normal that you would order your meal and it would take 45 minutes or more for it to be delivered and then it was cold! No exaggeration. Sit in the longer and it would take 15 - 20 minutes before a server would even acknowledge you. Regardless of whether Scenic was at fault or not, we missed approximately 40% of our cruise. The fare for our cabin was over $8600 per person. This did not include airfare or pre-cruise hotel accommodations. We received letters on board promising we would be individually contacted by "Customer Service" to arrive at a compensation package acceptable to us. Nobody contacted us. Instead they sent an email to our travel agent offering us $450 per person + a future cruise credit of $225 per person. Simple math will show that they offered us roughly 5% compensation for a cruise that had a 40% disruption. And, the $450 was the same for every cabin!! We had one of the more expensive ones and we get the same $$ as someone who paid significantly less than us! We appealed this decision all the way to the Chairman of the Board, Mr. Glen Moroney, and we were told "sorry but this is it. Final decision". In life we are often measured by how we perform when the chips are down. In this case Scenic failed miserably. We are experienced travelers, having taken multiple river and ocean cruises and a number of land tours. We have encountered issues before, but I have never felt compelled to write a scathing review, because when you travel a lot, you learn that sometimes things go wrong. Our Spectacular South of France cruise became instead a Mediocre Middle of France bus trip!! Scenic obviously does not respect their passengers. I recommend that you book any cruise with any company EXCEPT Scenic!!

Our journey did not get off to the best of starts, as our booked and paid for Scenic transfer person was not waiting for us when we arrived in Lyon airport. This was quite a concern and the gentleman at the information booth attempted to call one of the emergency contact numbers in our cruise handbook, but it was not connecting! He walked in about half an hour after we had come through the arrivals hall. AVOID Cabin 235 or 234. These are at the extreme rear of the Sapphire (2nd) deck and due to the heavy rains which had been received in the days preceding the commencement of our cruise, our ship was waiting in Macon instead of Chalon-Sur-Saone, as the captain was concerned that he may not make it that far back up the Saone or that we would become stuck there. Unfortunately, although the water levels were dropping, which enabled us to sail to the original start point, this was done at night, and cruising against a strong current which meant that the engines had to work very hard, which we felt very much!!! The noise and vibration in the cabin was extreme! The couple in cabin 234 asked for a move and paid for an upgrade to the Diamond Deck. Upon entry to the cabin at embarkation, I was immediately disappointed by the size of the cabin. I have cruised with Evergreen on the Rhine/Main/Danube and their "suites" are bigger. I also saw (from friends made) the size of some other suites, and they were no better. The butler service wasn't used by us although we accessed our 1 bag of free laundry. The food on board was fantastic. Chef Rodrigo had put together a great team and menus. We were also fortunate enough to dine at Table La Rive. Fabulous!!! Our meal at L'Amour was also lovely. Hard to find anything to complain about, until the last night when our service was VERY SLOW. Breakfasts were great with the egg chef being very popular. Lunches had a great variety, and if one didn't want to dine in the dining room the Riverview Terrace had a great selection of snacks too. The bar service was great from Mihai the barman to Valentin and Razdan the waiters who were great at remembering orders and ensuring that we were looked after whenever we needed to order. The reception desk was operated during the day by the most delightful man, Ferdinando. He was always happy and friendly, and quick to give advice on places to go in the towns we were visiting. With so many great Scenic Freechoice excursions to choose from in each port, it was hard to make a decision, but you can't do everything. A couple of the most memorable ones were the Truffle hunting and the visit to Valhrona chocolates! The Sundowners evening drinks at Tournon Castle gave us access to unprecedented views, and the Scenic Enrich event at the Popes' Palace in Avignon was superb. All in all, a fabulous trip, with a mix on older and some younger people. Evening entertainment did not give much for a lot of us, but was similar to other river cruises. Some of the ports visited left a bit to be desired too, especially our last port where we berthed for 2 days, Tarascon. Sure, we could walk into town, but it wasn't a nice town. One felt it was a particularly lower socio-economic type town with many shops empty or closed and the entire place appeared unkempt and unloved. Unfortunately, not sure whether it is because it's a 5 star cruise, but some passengers seemed to act very "entitled" and treat the staff quite badly. It was lovely to be greeted by the captain every time we left or returned from an excursion. Oh, and don't be fooled into thinking that the "Vitality" pool is a pool, it's a hot tub, but not very much hot. I'm not sure that this cruise was worth the extra cost compared to Evergreen, as although it includes minibar and alcohol and drinks 24/7, you aren't on the ship that much most days, and that to me is the only real difference.

We have just returned from a trip on the Scenic Sapphire ship on the River Rhone. We flew to Lyon and sailed to Marseille. It is a luxurious ship with very attentive & helpful staff, always willing to give a smile and helpful advice. Our cabin was the panoramic suite and the view as you are sailing from the large window was brilliant, our cabin boy Patrik was most helpful, he kept our room spotless and replenished all toiletries and mini bar most efficiently, which of course was great. The trips we attended were all good with brilliant guides that spoke very good English and had an excellent knowledge of the areas. The food and service in the restaurants were good with plenty of choices of both food and wine. We met lots of lovely people who were enjoying life on the river as we did. Would definitely recommend Scenic and we would like to travel with them again (must book early!). Thanks to all staff and the Captain who was very 'hands on' and friendly who made our first river trip most enjoyable.
