Holland America Line HAL - Nieuw Amsterdam - 14 Night Great Alaska Explorer This is our 2nd two week trip to Alaska on this ship. The trip in Sep 2023, was excellent relatively speaking, this one was pathetic and not worth the time and added expense. Dining Room - inconsistent food quality, from no taste to far too salty. Even could be labelled disgusting, at times the presentation was such that a dog's breakfast looks more appealing ??? They had an Indonesian dish, where the noodles appeared as though they were held together by wallpaper paste. Morimoto - has the Iron Chef label, is the fee based Japanese restaurant that leaves a lot to be desired for the price. Compared to what there is in Japan, it falls short of being quality authentic Japanese cuisine. For a person who frequents Japan on a regular basis, Morimoto is a disappointment. Lido Deck - Italian Section - ready made pasta is dry and hard,appears as though it had been sitting out for days. Occasionally the meat/sausage Lasagna was extremely good, and the gnocchi with basil/pesto - excellent. Breakfast - pass on the donuts, they are hard, an average doughnut shop would fail, if they attempted to serve this to patrons. Basically there is very little quality control, though you will see the chefs walking about looking important, but doing very little. Asian Section - the Sushi is better than what it was Sep 2023, overall it has improved since Sep 2023, though it still falls short of being equivalent to what one would expect in Japan. In general the food quality in the Lido, surprisingly was at par or better, than that of the Dining Room. Which is a complete reversal from 2023 and quite a shocker. Other Lido Issue - you can mark your table as occupied, but unless someone is sitting there while the other is obtaining their food selection, do not be surprised if someone else ends up occupying it. We found it rather surprising that after day 2 they were starting to run out of a number of popular teas? At time there would be no tea available, unless you paid extra. New York Pizza - the pizza was like cardboard, equivalent to the cheapest store bought frozen pizza. We were on another Holland America Ship and the pizza was excellent. Similar or better to that of a good pizzeria. Dive-In: Burgers/fries/onion frizzles are excellent, unfortunately their hours of operation is quite short. They will also customize burgers to a certain extent. Unfortunately overall, the food quality is poor compared Sep 2023 While on the ship attempting to get a hold of customer service, was not easy, as at times it took well over 5 minutes for someone to answer the phone if they would even answer - At Your Service is a joke. If you book under a campaign that is sponsored by HAL, don't be surprised if they do not provide/honor the offers that were in effect at the time of booking. In our case they did not fulfill one as aspect of their Campaign Offer/Promotion. If you book a suite, do not expect any special perks compared to the regular staterooms. In other words, all you get with a suite is a larger room, at a far greater cost. The previous time we were in an outside window stateroom at a substantially lower price, with a lot of perks added on. No perks for staying in a suite. Nothing. Issues: the sprinkler in the suite was leaking on 3 separate days, there was an issue with the room lighting, kept on flashing for no reason, and HAL would not honor their campaign promotion. Spent a lot of time attempting to resolve issues, wasting away our vacation time. The ship had a water shutdown for a couple of hours, rather inconvenient if you are in the shower or need water for medication. Also verify you account on a daily basis, don't be surprised if additional charges mysteriously show up for services never requested or used. If you are interested in Land/Shore Excursions, wait till you get to port, and look at some of the local operators. Their pricing will be the same or lower than what can be had for on the ship. As well if the weather is not to your liking, you don't have to take/book the excursion. If booked with HAL and the weather is poor, the tours will still continue. If you cancel, do not expect a refund or credit. In our case over the past two years, on the two week Alaska cruises, we were lucky to have at the most two favorable days. i.e. most of the time it rained. Not conducive to a pleasant helicopter or float plane experience. HAL has tendency now of nickel and diming customers. Even if you are on a drink plan, expect an 18% service charge to be added to each and every drink ordered. And the drink plans are restrictive as to were the drinks are picked up. Remember all specialty restaurants on board have an additional service charge, cover charge, and some menu items will incur additiontal charges. +++. The entertainment except for the comedians was so so, in our opinion, not to our liking. Of course, based on personal preference. The drink package is quite expensive, if you drink only 5 alcoholic beverages a day, definitely not worth the added cost. The drink packages pricing is applied to all who occupy the stateroom. And not all drinks are included. Don't be surprised to see an additional 18% service charge to drinks and specialty restaurants. We have contacted HAL a number of times regarding our issues through their online survey, a letter to customer service and emails. To date of this posting, we have not received a response from HAL. Only an auto-reply confirmation that they received the emails, and that they will get in touch shortly. Canada Place - Embarkation - from entry to the building to when you actually board the ship, expect being shuffled around the building for at least two hours prior to boarding. Extremely disorganized. And for those who have an issue with walking long, long distances, and standing for hours. Disembarkation - 20-40 minutes. Provided that you take the luggage off yourself. Would we recommend Holland America Lines: Based on our most recent experience - NO. Definitely Not. It is a real expensive gamble. In the past we had some inconveniences that were resolved quickly, therefore the quality of our vacation was not impacted, This time it was the expensive trip from hell.

What a textbook example on how to NOT handle a situation. Our trip would have been extraordinarily disappointing due to the fire that shut down the lodge in Denali and the rain that made a daily appearance. However, something might have been salvaged had Holland American done a decent job of managing this. First, I must say that the local staff and local management did an excellent job with what they had available. Unfortunately, that was without any guidance, management or plans from above (as I learned when asking very direct questions of some staff). I am a retired USAF officer who served in a tactical communications unit and, early on, learned how to pivot and command when situations changed in the blink of an eye. The first thing is to have more than lower level managers on the ground. To start with, I cannot understand why the top management did not have at least a basic disaster plan laid out given that Denali has many forest fires every year. They had to know that one would present a danger to the lodge and the land portion of the cruise package eventually. Even then, I cannot grasp why management did not immediately (as in ASAP) send higher management to the area to provide better guidance and offer authority for greater decision changes. Obviously the CEO did not call an urgent meeting to address the situation and should have assigned a team to go on location to make a bad experience at least tolerable. Instead, it was a complete disaster. We were bounced around from one place to another with no knowledge of what was next and where we were going next. We would get notes slipped under the door, after midnight, that instructed us to have our bags packed and in the hall by 6:30AM. Had we not awakened during the night, we would have slept too late for this. Once we got up and out, we had to sit around the lobby for hours waiting to see where we would be transported to next. By time we got to the next location, there was no time to even take a hike or check out the town. Had we not been bounced around continually, we could have at least hiked or arranged for some other entertainment/sightseeing. Honestly, I feel quite strongly that when the bonuses come out this year, a large portion of what is intended for upper level management should be redirected to those that WERE on location and did the best they could.

When anyone has asked me what my favorite cruise line is I have always said Holland America. This trip was so disappointing. I'm not going to do Holland America again. Alaska is not disappointing it is amazing and if you can go there do so. This is my second time. 1. Land tour - food not included. You can buy a food package or get food on your own. I will say that there are options as far as restaurants go if you don't buy the meal package. Fairbanks, there are restaurants you can walk to from the hotel. Only a few blocks away from the hotel. Denali, Holland America and Princess Properties have restaurants. Across the highway there is ice cream, pizza shop, little grocery store gift shop etc. Holland America Denali property has many steps and hills to get to the main building, but they do have Shuttles. There is a restaurant, shops, entertainment in the lower level of the Denali property too which is nice as it is so close to the rooms. The property also have shuttles to Princess properties but make sure you get on the right shuttle. Anchorage, restaurants close to hotel for dinner, breakfast a few blocks away, but everything else closes early near the hotel like 6 p.m. Aleyeska, the grounds and resort is very nice. They have some restaurants. They do have a shuttle that can take you to another breakfast place and to a bakery, gas station, pizza place. The shuttle comes around every hour. We did it once and then just ate at the hotel. 2. Holland America is very organized when it comes to having people at the Airport to meet you, and having people at the hotels to help you. Very knowledgeable, pleasant and helpful. 3. Hotel on land tour - okay but it is Alaska so you are not going to get 4 or 5 star hotels in most places you go. Most of them were decent and had restaurants. Fairbanks is considered a city, but it is not your typical city at all it is more a large town in my opinion. Aleyeska resort was very nice. and my favorite. Take the cable car up the mountain. 4. Land tour - you will be moving a lot, so it can be exhausting. 5. If you have mobility issues, this can be a challenge. On the train you have to go up some stairs, and if you want the bathroom or to eat, you will have to go down them to get there. 6. The excursions in Fairbanks, the Riverboat and gold panning were good. Lunch at the Riverboat stop was delicious and included. The boat also stops and has demonstrations of sled dogs, and you get off in one spot and see Reindeer and you stop at a Village. This was very nice. 7. Denali has an excursion excluded. I was sick so didn't make it. Just want you to know because I saw excursions that you had to pay for too. 8. There is like a urgent care in Denali on the Holland America/Princess property but they don't take out of state insurance which is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard since all of us are from out of state and still in the United States of America. 9. Luggage was in room in each destination no issues there. Cruise: Very easy to get on and into our room. Luggage may take awhile to get to your room. We got 3 out of 4 bags and then I saw mine near Elevator and just took it. Room Steward Excellent! Everything else very disappointing Dinning room - I was shocked at the little bit of enthusiasm from the staff. Very few friendly people. The food - just ok. Much smaller portions which is fine, except when my friend ordered French toast for breakfast, she got one piece. Waffles tiny you get two. Pancakes an eggs normal. Juices, even if you have drink package, you have to pay for it. No bells and whistles. No baked Alaska with all staff coming in with lights down low and candles a blazing. Lido deck - staff much nicer - Food seemed to be the same for lunch and dinner. My favorite the desert section. They also had a specialty coffee area there as they did on crow's nest and one other area that escapes my mind. Bars - Bartenders and staff very underwhelming. Very few places did anyone come right over and actually have any enthusiasm. Wasn't until almost last day when they needed you to mention their name on the survey that they showed any interest. Entertainment - OMG horrible! On the big stage, entertainment 45 minutes and nothing to write home about. The only decent entertainment was the dueling pianos Lina and George in the Casino area. There was a rock and roll area the band and male singer were good, but there are other singers. I am so disappointed as I paid a lot of money for this cruise. But Alaska, amazing! Don't miss it! The ship also docked in Vancouver which is also beautiful. We stayed a few extra days and I'm glad we did. Stayed at the Hyatt, which is literally a less than 10 minute walk from the terminal. If you can walk it, do it. We had to wait 45 minutes in line for a taxi at the terminal. But I will say, it was organized and all the taxis come so you will get one and not have to fight for it. The Hyatt is a very nice hotel, and top notch customer service. Front desk, Concierge, rental car booth Top notch! I hope this was helpful! I really was so sad as I loved this cruise line.

We have been on much better cruise ships than this one, BUT being one of, if not the only ship, to cruise up Glacier Bay was worth it. All except one bar, were closed at 9.30pm and that one bar closed at 11pm. Service at most of the bars was atrocious. If I were to cruise on a Holland America cruise again, we definitely wouldn't get the drinks package. It was so difficult to order and receive drinks, unless you went up to the bar yourself. Some of the bars only served the waiters, so you had to sit and wait. It was the worst we have ever experienced. The shows were pretty average too. The staff in the dining room were amazing though. If you sat at the same table every night, then the waiters got to know you and certainly paid excellent attention to you. Our waiters, Pian and Ralph were exceptional men. They were very attentive, entertained us with magic tricks and were also very friendly. They certainly are an asset to Holland America. We thank them, very much, for the service they provided us on our cruise.

We booked for the first time in Holland America Nieuw Amsterdam ship verandah room for Alaska tour. While booking, we confirm Indian vegetarian food availability in the ship. Unfortunately, it is very hard to find vegetarian food in Lido and other restaurants. new York pizza was good & vegetarian burger bad in taste. most of upper deck good view space was reserved by cabana to make more money . spa/ salon /massage/acupunctures prices are higher side . Also, we found hair in rice lunch at lido restaurant and informed the available manager. There's not too much activity in the ship. There are cards / games /brush paintings available . The movie shown in the afternoon in the world stage was boring. Only stage dance performances were good. Only 2-3 expensive stores on the 3rd floor .most of the item prices are higher than Port prices. We got 2 coupons in rooms, $250 for jewelry, and $100 for photos. we were so excited when we tried to use in Effy jewelry minimum spending $1000 & photos premium plan $400. Everything is expensive in cruise from specialty cuisines/ bar / soft drinks/ special coffee/milk shakes . $17 per room gratuity is higher side. Effy diamond stores raffle gives very cheap gifts and wasted our time . On 2nd floor artwork stores, we won free artwork in raffle prizes and asked $35 shipping from Miami to New York total Ripoff. The manager Rein was rude. The photo store takes pictures every where in ship & sells $110 for 5 pic to $499 for 30 pictures expensive. The Nieuw Amsterdam ship is old and rusted most of the places. The balcony rooms are not wow. Carpet & furniture in our room is not good in condition. The ship staff was polite and smiling. Ship is not recommended if you wanted activities. it's good for retired people. The ship waited for late coming guests more than 40 minutes after giving boarding time delays ship departure almost an hour for which complaint to customers service manager. one of port all shore excursion was cancelled due to bad weather where as on that port weather was excellent another mismanagement . Rolling Stone live singing was good. they lied about disembarkation at Vancouver Canada place fruits not allowed to take out but seriously no one was checking your bags /hand luggage or custom forms. ship is not recommended.
