Star Vista chartered this ship for our Malt Shop Cruise at the end of October. We have no complaints, well maybe one, from the buffet, main dining, friendly staff who always greeted us with a greeting and smile. The weather was perfect as well. Our only beef was the Pinnacle Grill and Canaletto Restaurants, which served rather ordinary meals. Not worth paying for compared to the buffet and main dining rooms, which served pretty good food. I would highly recommend a Holland ship, and we would certainly book again. There were 8 of us on this cruise, and everyone else feels the same. An aft cabin is worth the price. 8171

We sailed out of Alaska on August 28,2021. Ship was clean, staff was great. We had a balcony room but the door was beyond difficult to open so we did not go out on balcony as often as we usually do on a cruise. We asked about door when we checked in and room steward did put in order to have it worked on. After complaining every day they finally replaced a part about 2 days before end of cruise. They did refund a small amount of room. We asked to be moved but told no rooms available although ship was not near capacity. Food was good, we saw some good performances. I am willing to try another Holland America ship but this needs updated.

Our party of six sailed on the Nieuw Amsterdam to Alaska out of Seattle on 9/11. Having sailed on Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Disney, & Carnival, I can say this was by far my favorite cruise. The ship is sophisticated & beautiful, with original artwork throughout the ship. Our balcony cabin was spacious & nicely decorated, w/3 closets & room under the bed for luggage. Our stewards were right there when needed, but not at all intrusive. They remembered our names & preference for extra towels & tissues. They even removed the barriers between our 3 rooms on the balconies. Most mornings, we started with coffee & fresh fruit from room service, then went to either the main dining room ( try the croissant bread pudding!) or the Lido Market for a made-to-order omelet. At lunch, we tried both the Dive In for burgers & hot dogs, and the Pizza Place, where you can order a personal pizza w/ choices such as "The Grand Central" or "The Brooklyn". Dinners were consistently good in the dining room, but we also went to Pinnacle Grill, where they serve a gigantic porterhouse steak. I had the filet mignon w/ lobster dumplings. Don't miss the baked Alaska or Creme Brulee. But the true standout is Tamarind, a pan Asian restaurant where EVERYTHING was delicious, even the cocktails! We attended the cooking demos & trivia. There were also some educational talks about the Iditerod & Alaskan wildlife that were quite interesting. Mainstage shows seemed to be mostly dancing, which we didn't attend. But the band in BB Kings Blues Club is fabulous, & we stayed for 2 of their sets each night they performed! They also have dueling pianos in the Billboard Lounge & classical music on the Lincoln Center Stage. The comedians & magician were also good, but I wish HAL would move their shows to the Mainstage, since they were standing room only in the smaller venue. As far as excursions go, the Inside Passage is spectacular. In Juneau, we went to the Glacier Gardens & saw the upside down trees & to Mendenhall Glacier, but it was difficult viewing due to very foggy weather that day. My niece & nephew walked the mile to the see the falls there, and said it was well worth it. In Sitka, we took a boat tour where we saw humpback whales, otters & an eagle, then went by bus to a refuge for orphaned bears & the Raptor Center. We didn't get off the ship in Icy Point Strait; there are just a few shops there. Last excursion was in Ketchikan, where we saw a very entertaining Lumberjack show, followed by a ride to Saxman Village to see some native dancing & totem pole carving. Afterward, we browsed the many shops in Ketchikan for souveniers, a short walk from the ship. Both embarkation & disembarkation were smooth & well organized. It was chilly & rainy in Alaska, but the warm smiles & friendly staff of the Nieuw Amsterdam more than made up for it. I can't wait till next time!

Even the second time, the 7 day explorer doesn't disappoint. HAL is taking all precautions to keep travelers safe including mask wearing while on board except while eating/drinking. All passengers and crew were vaccinated and tested before the cruise departure.
