Our first cruise was on the Island Princess, and we loved it. My Husband and myself went from Fort Lauderdale, through the Panama Canal, and up to Vancouver. We found all of the staff to be so friendly, and nothing was too much trouble. Our waiters, Leo and Oliver, were fantastic, and remembered our likes and dislikes from the start. Our balcony stateroom was immaculate, and kept spotless by the cabin staff. We didn't go on many of the ship excursions, we preferred doing our own thing, and have some wonderful memories of the countries we visited. We found that during the day it was very quiet, and plenty of space wherever we decided to sit. There's not a huge amount of entertainment, but that is how we like it....very peaceful during the day, but plenty going on at night. The theatre acts were great, and we loved it when the head chef and maitre de gave a cookery demonstration. Haven't laughed so much in years. Would definitely recommend the Island Princess, and we are looking forward to our next cruise with Princess.

Just got back from our cruise from Fort Lauderdale - Santiago first time cruise with this cruise line and the last read on. First the good points. Lovely Ship Nice state room apart size of shower. Certain Staff on board see below, Our state room cabin Steward Ryan and Joy both bar waiters in Crooners Cyrille waiter in dining room. Steven Jaymes pianist in Crooners That’s it I’m afraid rest was really down hill. 1, The food was poor and often cold, the Horizon bar in the morning even when not busy continually ran out of food even when not busy no fried eggs no toast with the staff behind there just stood about chatting, the waiters disturbing you when eating breakfast leaning over you and filling trays with cutlery I know they have to do that but not in between you eating. There was no labelling of the foods saying what was vegetarian or what products were in the foods for allergies. At lunch and dinner same either running out or food which was looked as though it had been stood for hrs. And all the staff in there need to smile a bit more. Cyrille who greeted you as you went into the room was the exception you need to make this girl the highest paid in the room. The food in the Evening in the other dinning rooms use to take ages to be brought out to you and again either cold or the meat not cooked to how I asked. 2, The entertainment on board can only be described as diabolical the worst we have ever seen after 20+ Cruises, nothing to do throughout the day apart from the odd film on lido deck, really boring especially when there were 2 of the ports 4 days between them, the night shows in the theatre were just thrown together and totally unprofessional we stopped going after a couple but we know we were not missing anything because everybody on board was moaning about them. 3,Drinks The second day on board I noticed the waiters were picking the Lime pieces up with there fingers when placing them in my glass, considering the amount of cabin cards these people handle I found this very unhygienic I reported this to a bar supervisor who said it would not happen again, I told him he needed to pass this on to all bar staff as this was not correct at all. The very next day it happened again this time I reported it to the front desk who took my name and cabin number and she said it would not happen again and then the very next day it happened again not only this but un wrapping straws out off the paper sleeves and then using there fingers to place in the glass, I again reported this to the front desk who again took my details she seemed to look at me and think it’s not you again, but seriously I take on board when going in to all eating ares you should was your hands throughly for 20 seconds to try and avoid viruses what’s the point though if these staff just use there fingers to do this? When trying to get a drink on the Lido deck you had to go to the bar yourself as either the waiters were watching the film showing on the screen or chatting away to each other when I went to the bar I mentioned this every time to the bar man who just looked me gone out, I found this very frustrating. 4, Easter Island This was the reason we picked this cruise to start with, the morning before we docked at Easter Island I went down to the front desk and mentioned I had booked a private excursion as all Island Princess were fully booked up I asked the lady who came from Bolton that would the princess excursion people get off the boat first or will they all get off in the same way? She tolled me they would be no preference my tour was booked for 9.00am the first one for princess cruises were 9.15am. There was a message on the tannoy the night before Easter Island saying tender passes would be available the following morning from 8.30am, imagine my disgust when I got down to the Bordeaux room the following morning at 7.50am to find out they’d had started giving them out at 7.0 am and that my tender passes were 478-479 I was fuming and worse so when they did start loading the tender boats that the first off the boat were all the ones who were going on a princess excursion off the island and didn’t even have to get a tender ticket these has priority over everybody. It was said over the tannoy for people in wheel chairs, walking sticks and walking difficulties that it would be unsuitable for these people to get in the tender boats and walk ashore I don’t think anybody who was unfortunately to be like this took any notice because along with this and the crowd of people wanting to get off at Easter Island we never got ashore until 3.40pm missing my trip completely in fact seeing some people who had been on there’s coming back before I had got to Easter Island. They said the last tender back from Easter Island would be 5.15pm in fact it was more like 21.00pm if we had known that I would have took a taxi or a trip round the island myself The whole day was a complete fiasco with the Captain at one stage coming over the tannoy saying we must LISTEN and all be patience as though we were school children. 5, The shops If I heard or saw anything advertising the EFFY jewellery shop once on the in board TV on in the daily patter I heard it a thousand times it was hard sell 24/7 The Photographer’s on board following you about trying to take your photos and then the prices! Come on guys. The all lot of the shop were constant hard sell it got annoying. 6, Our cabin was on level 12 Alloa. Why do they have to put the sun lounges out at 7 in the morning? All you heard from this time onwards was the banging and placing of these been shuffled about on the deck above, when I mentioned this to the deck attendant one morning he answered that’s what time we have been told to put them out yes but why nobody went out while 10.00am + All in All I will never go with this cruise line again can put up with the odd hic up but not all these.

Island Princess is an older ship without the bells, whistles and wow factor of newer ships That would not have mattered if the food, service, entertainment and mini suite had lived up to expectations, sadly they did not. In fact problems began before we boarded, when the pre arranged Princess transport from hotel to ship did not arrive to pick us up. They had also taken us to the wrong hotel when picking us up at the airport. We booked a mini suite, but though more expensive than a balcony, it was really no different from balconies we have had on other ships or with other cruise lines. In fact in many ways it was the worse stateroom we have had, it looked shabby and dated, with stained carpets and furniture and peeling wall coverings. Food was mediocre, with an occasional good dish, but the quality of the beef served was poor. We experienced some of the worst service of any cruise we have taken, especially from crew in the buffet. On a positive note the itinerary was great and we enjoyed a couple of great excursions. However the third and final excursion we took was not good I cannot in good faith recommend this cruise or in fact this cruise line.

Lovely staff food in buffet restaurant was good entertainment was good. The spa was very very expensive ie 200 dollars for a facial. Someone managed to put payments on my account which I can say was resolved. The food in the main dining room was adequate no presentation and that was after an hour and half wait for free dinning time. The excursions were very poor and expensive I would not recommend any. This ship is very dated and smelly but you get use to the smell within a couple of days. I would only recommend this ship if you get a good deal otherwise go with someone else. Overall we had a great time met new friends who had sailed with princess many times and everyone we spoke too said the ship was now old getting scruffy. The photos were also very expensive they print them out then just dispose of them,if they sold them cheaper people would definitely buy more

Look most cruises are all the same in Alaska. They all follow each other. A couple of tips - go to reception day 1 and ask them to turn off your auto gratuities. Pay your room steward yourself in cash. Anytime dining is much nicer than the buffet. Try an afternoon tea. Very nice. Insist on a small table if you want it. Otherwise enjoy making small talk with a dozen people. Food was excellent. Avoid the beauty section - A rip off. Was disappointed at the back of a ship was a quieter area with waiter service that you had to pay $20 for the privilege to sit there. I dislike the open are movies. Watch them in your room. We don't need the visual and noise pollution around the pool. Shows were very good. Get there early to ensure you don't miss a seat. 7 years ago I went on the Norwegian sun return trip from Vancouver. I thought Whittier to Vancouver was a better option. If you want to go to Denali avoid Princess, book independently and Fly into Fairbanks.
