We have just returned from an 8 day cruise down the Rhine from Basel to Cologne. The crew and the ship, The Emily Brontë were found to be faultless. My only reservation on a River Cruise of this kind is the amount of walking that is required for shore excursions. For a number of the excursions all passengers whether old, young, fit or infirm were expected to walk 2 Kilometres ( 1.5 miles) from the place of docking to the town, to then begin a walking tour with guide. Following the walking tour, there would then follow the 2 Kilometre return walk back to the ship. We were advised that we could book our own transport ie. cab to and from the ship and tour round at our own pace for the remaining limited time. The Emily Brontë never docked close to the places of interest and in Cologne, despite 13 docking berths nearby, we docked the other side of The Rhine and this time we had a coach ride over the bridge to a pick up point not far from The Cathedral. If you book this cruise be of a mind that there is a great deal of walking involved.…

Overall excellent, staff great, food delicious, ship spotless and modern. recommend do not travel by Eurostar, We did not arrive at the ship until 20:00, first day wasted. (our choice but timings not explained) BIG MINUS:- Only other let down was the final trip from Basel to the Alps. It was a perfect day for a trip to the top on the mountain on the railway but we were left at Grundelwald train station half way up the mountain for almost 2 hours without anywhere to eat our supplied (british rail sandwiches) picnic. The restaurant at the station had "no picnic" signs everywhere. not much to see or do, we were stopped from going on the train to the "top of the Alps" without a reason given. It ruined the whole day, mainly because the weather was perfect and the views would have been magnificent. To cap the day off we discovered from the sister ship the "George Eliot" that they did the same excursion all the way to the top. (it was the first day of their cruise) When we asked the Reps why? we were told to write it in the review. Hopefully the Riviera team noticed with the reduction in tips.…

You are never sure how a holiday company will treat you if there is a problem with your holiday. We were on the plane awaiting take off at Basel airport when all flights to UK were stopped. One phone call to Riviera and they collected all 32 Riviera passengers, took them back to our cruise ship, gave us new cabins and treated us extremely well for the next two days . They escorted us back to the airport very early in the morning and worked hard to get everyone on the flight home. (unfortunately 6 members of our group had been 'lost' by Easy-Jet. I don't know what happened to them but I am pretty sure they were not abandoned.) A text book example of customer service. Well done Cruise director Daniel and the crew of the Emily Bronte.…

Nice little ship, well laid out with an excellent bathroom with a walk in shower. The bed was really comfortable as was the room temperature in really hot weather. The small balcony was nice to sit on at times. The large sun deck was roomy and a seat was always available. The staff were very helpful in the dining room. The Bistro at the back was nice too, though the menu did not change. The burgers and tomato and pepper soup were great but the lamb shepherd’s pie was definitely not. It was too quiet at night with some poor entertainment that was pretty bad. A quiz might have been better. However, the walking tours took half an hour to get to where the tours started along towpaths in the heat. A shuttle there and back would have helped as everyone, myself included was ancient.…

Just returned from Christmas Market river cruise. Boat and cabin very clean and well laid out. The staff were excellent and attentive, during our cruise COVID regulations changed and the Riviera staff did everything to make our stay enjoyable and stress free. Although some of the markets weren’t as big as usual, Cologne and Bonn were fantastic. Don’t be put off by COVID, the Riviera staff are there to assist with everything.…
