What travellers are saying
- Grover RPensacola, FL18,062 contributionsThis is one of America's earliest parks from the formation of the NPS and it is one of the country's best protecting incredible virgin forest, cascading waterfalls, magical mountain meadows, clear lakes and one of the tallest and most massive mountains in the US. The park has so many great things to see, but the highlight is the volcanic, glacial covered mountain that gives the park its name.
We spent 2 days and a night in the Paradise area, as well as a drive by the Sunrise area. I recommend you allot multiple days as the weather on the mountain can be temperamental and erratic. Despite a forecast that called for sunshine, our first day was thick fog at the top but a great day at the base and mid-mountain. We started with forest hikes at Twin Firs and Trail of Shadows, and I was amazed at the size and height of these virgin forest. After lunch at National Park Inn, we continued up the mountain as the fog subsided taking in views and waterfalls like Narada and Christine Falls. We then went to the other side of the mountain to hike the Tatoosh Range to Snow and Bench Lakes which were beautiful alpine lakes before ending the day at the Jackson Visitor Center.
We spent the night at the historic Paradise Inn which was an incredible setting, especially as the fog lifted and we could see the mountain at twilight. The next morning, we woke early to the Skyline Loop. This was an incredible hike that has to be top 5 in the National Park System and is rated #1 in the state of Washington by AllTrails. The views of the mountain, meadows and glaciers are all incredible. You also get to see 3 other massive Cascade, volcanic mountains, Adams, Hood (in Oregon) and St. Helen's. However, it is not just the views as we were surrounded by wildlife on our hike seeing multiple deer and marmots. My wife loved the marmots.
Again, the entire stay was incredible, one of our favorite parks of the 38 we have visited. I will also say the Paradise Inn is a great stay and allows you to do so many things in the park. However, you really need to plan for several different things and adjust to the weather. When the weather breaks the right way, there is no better park to visit.Written 30 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Such talent, and available for the public to view these great iron pieces of recycled iron made into art. We truly enjoyed the walk through the garden and premises. - Tracy DSeattle, WA9 contributionsThis is a fantastic gallery featuring local art. I live near Rainier and buy art here for myself, but I would recommend this unique gallery to anyone visiting from out-of-state who would like an amazing souvenir of their trip that is classy. The gallery also has a unique book corner with new and used/collectible books where Mt Rainier and mountaineering are featured along with other books of local interest or focused on nature, national parks, etc. Take time to visit upstairs….owner Rick is an avid art collector himself with a strong appreciation for local history…all of which is well documented in the art he shares with the public.Written 23 May 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - dctrentsterVirginia, USA259 contributionsThis is a great mountain to climb. Above Camp Muir you’re going to want a guide unless you’re a climbing expert. Even if you’re not going above Camp Muir you may want a guide if the weather isn’t favorable. On our hike down from Muir the trail was snow covered, there were tracks in all directions, and the fog limited visibility to about 50 feet. Very easy to get lost. There’s cell coverage at Paradise and then at the higher elevations so bring your phone as well to aid winter navigation. Rainier is a beautiful mountain.Written 28 June 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Grover RPensacola, FL18,062 contributionsJust miles inside the western park entrance of Ashford is one of the first hikes you will find in the park. It is a relatively short and easy 0.4 mile hike with only 85 vertical feet through an old growth fir forest. Our group really enjoyed this short hike mainly for the old growth forest you get to see. Unfortunately, the Grove of the Patriarchs is closed at this time from flood damage, so this short loop is one of the best ways to experience the old growth at the base of the mountain.
Our first day at Rainier, the top of the mountain was covered in fog, so we made the most of hiking opportunities at the base and were glad to have this one. The Douglas Firs here are amazing in their size. I am not saying it is Redwoods, but it is impressive just the same. The hike is short and sweet but one of the better ones to experience the old growth forest at the base of the mountain.Written 27 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We were much improved and moving so much better after her treatment. And besides that she is a fascinating person and truly a joy to spend some time with her. Get an appointment with her if you can!Written 13 March 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
