- melandandyport hueneme26 contributionsMy husband and I visited Kemijarvi from California in July. We took the overnight train from Helsinki and arrived about 9:00 am. We hadn’t planned well and didn’t realize we needed a car to get around.
We walked from the train station to the tourist information center. The lady working (unfortunately I don’t remember her name) was extremely helpful. She spoke perfect English and gave us a map and suggestions for spending our day. She sent us on a hike only a short distance away and let us leave our heavy backpacks in her office. She also recommended a cafe in town for lunch. It was excellent.
We came back several hours later. We needed to pick up our bags and were concerned we would get stuck in the rain before our train left. She called around and reserved a day room at a local hotel. It was the perfect place to spend a few hours.
This is a beautiful part of the world and everyone we meet was extremely nice.
If you go to Kemijarvi, get a car and stop by the tourist information center. They're open for visitors at any time, with automatic lighting, and were very clean and well-kept. All the information was also in English. - Garin E5 contributionsWe booked with Mia, the owner, at very short notice. We had a spare day in Pyha and sent her a message having found a small reference to her farm in Lonely Planet. I'm so glad we did. From the very first email Mia was lovely and very welcoming. We booked a private horse ride for the next day.
Mia's farm is charming and easy to get to from the main road between Pyha and Kemijarvi. As we drove into the farm there were two reindeer chilling in the snow.
We rounded a corner and met Mia who welcomed us to her farm with open arms and carried us away in her passion for Finnish horses. Mia introduced us to our rides for the day and we set out into a snow covered winter forest where she pointed out various animal tracks and gave us a little history.
Such a fabulous experience, I highly recommend booking with Mia and will visit again on our next trip! Especially if her exciting plans come to fruition :)
