If you want to do something fun, interesting, and different, while visiting SF, or even if you live here, go to Pier 40, and rent a kayak from City Kayak. Ted the owner, and Johnny one of his team experienced instructor will make this experience safe and fantastic for you. Everyone there has an easy friendly attitude and they are very helpful.
The kayaks, vests, paddles are clean and disinfected. They access your skills and provide basic information before you go in your discovery. The scenery is outstanding! blue skies, or not; sunny or foggy, it does not matter, the birds, sea lions, and different boats, entertain you while you have a good view of the Bay Bridge, Oracle Baseball Giants home, Chase Center, the home of Golden State Warrior, and much more. My experience was amazing and that is why a highly recommend you offer yourself this treat. I liked so much that I continue to go twice a week as my regular exercise.

From the beginning of organising my paddle to the actual event, Chris was a great communicator. I was coming from the UK and had some health and mobility difficulties but Chris took it all in his stride and nothing was too much trouble. Although a keen kayaker, I haven’t been out in the water for some time so after discussion we decided it was best to go tandem with Chris. He arrived on time, all the gear ready, good safety talk and off we went. The day started foggy but got so sunny and warm. We paddled from Mission Bay, through the marina where we got up close to the sunbathing seals, up river beside the Oracle Stadium, back down river, under the Bay Bridge and out past the Ferry Building. Chris shared his knowledge of marine and bird life, history of the Bay Area and his passion for San Francisco and it’s amazing past. It was a fantastic experience and one that will stay with me for a very long time. Chris was a superb guide and I felt safe, comfortable and very, very happy. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is visiting San Francisco as a wonderful way to see the Bay Area from a different perspective.

In August of this year, I had the opportunity to spend three days in Mendocino with ETC. ETC is a wonderful organization which gives people with various disabilities the opportunity to experience being in the out-of-doors who might not otherwise have the chance to do so. The Mendocino trip was one of my most favorite trips thus far. What was so awesome about it for me, as a totally blind individual, was that I was able to experience the contrast between kayaking on the river and kayaking in the ocean. On the river, the water was glassy smooth and I got to practice my paddling skills in a calm and quiet environment. In the ocean, I loved feeling the rush of paddling fast, over the swells made by big waves and by other boats. I don't know if I have had a feeling that is more exhilarating than this. But what was really awesome about this area was kayaking in the caves. I was matched with a guy who had the same sense of adventure that I had and who did not hold back from paddling through any of the caves. Each cave was incredibly unique in its shape, rock formations, and reverberating sounds as the waves rushed through the walls. At the end of the trip, I got to experience the roaring sound of water as it came spewing through the rocks in a blowhole. On Saturday night some of us went for a walk on the beach before dinner. It was an area with many cliffs and rock formations and when the waves came in from different angles, it sounded like the waves in stereo or in surround sound. The weather was perfect for kayaking; cool and fresh and invigorating. I loved feeling the slippery, slimy kelp as it slid through my fingers, and hearing the sounds of egrets, seagulls and other seabirds. We stayed in an old farmhouse with an old fashioned fireplace that kept us warm in a chilly environment. The food was fabulous and the guides were always there with their expert help and their warm and friendly conversation. I strongly recommended this trip to anyone with a sense of adventure. I especially recommend it to those who are visually impaired because it is a trip filled with some of the most phenomenal sounds out there. Thank you, ETC.
