Because of the nature of the rocks and being glass like based, walking on the smaller chunks sounds like walking on broken ceramic flower pots...a tinkly crushing sound.

The Tufa State Park located just outside Lee Vining has nicely done interpretive displays, very cool geologic features (the tufa), and nice walking paths.
