Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Liege-Bastogne-LiegeZurich, Switzerland443 contributionsTruly wonderful.
This abbey thrived for over three hundred years as a Cistercian monastery before being forcibly closed and robbed of its valuables as part of the Tudor policy to dissolve the structures of Catholic faith in Ireland in the in the mid 16th century.
The essence of resilience is to come back stronger, and Holycross Abbey did just that, albeit over four hundred years later.
Due to foresight of some local clergy, the local Archbishop, the hard work of a whole community, the Abbey was restored fifty years ago and has risen to prominence as a parish church and an iconic place of pilgrimage in the years since.
The restoration was as sensitive as it could be to the original structure and the original technologies that built it in the first place.
Worth noting are the ceinings - see photograph, the large scale 15th century hunting scene drawing on one of the side-aisle walls, and the relic that gives the Abbey and the village its name, a tiny fragment of what is said to be the true cross.
Like the Shroud of Turin, who knows. The point is it brings the curious, the interested and the needy to pray, to spend time to hope. Beautiful place.
The village is neat and very pretty. Sitting on the banks of the river Suir, flower beds abound, there is a small community of thatched cottages that add interest and the towns of Thurles and Cashel are just minutes away.Written 1 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Gerard OThurles, Ireland12 contributionsTop-class performers both musical and dramatic have appeared on this stage since 2006. It is an excellent addition to the cultural tapestry of Thurles and indeed Tipperary County. It has a super dedicated staff committed to the success of the whole project. - aoreilly_13Wexford, Ireland58 contributionsIf your in Thurles and have time, I highly recommend this tour. It is small and short enough to do a self guided one, but there is plenty to interest fans of the GAA.Written 18 September 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - sarahcolLondon, UK92 contributionsWow. What an amazing time we all had here. Jake was such an incredible coach. He really looked after our group and provided the perfect amount of encouragement and insight for each rider. The horses are all super stars and teachers in their own right. I had the privilege to ride a wonderful horse called CJ who I learned so much from. I had some confidence issues with XC before coming to Crossogue, the team and horses there really helped me to boost my confidence, whilst better understanding how to actively ride a composition and course. The hospitality and food we received was simply wonderful (the cakes were a particular highlight!).
Mark and his team are so knowledgeable, kind and insightful.
My friends and I are planning to come back a few times next year now and make this an annual visit.. Thank you all.Written 12 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The GAA was formed in Thurles in 1884 and the centenary All-Ireland Hurling Final was held here in 1984.
It is a lovely stadium with a fantastic atmosphere on big big championships days in high summer. it holds over 45,000 these days with 24,000 of it seated.
I remember gong to Semple a few times back in the 1990's for the Féile Music Festival which as far as I know was paying for much of the modernisation visible today. A period of renovation was completed in the late noughties too and the result is a fine stadium, considered second only to Croke Park in the GAA. It has floodlights too though I've never actually been to an evening game here.
I've been here a few times over the years and always enjoyed it. It has terracing behind the two goal ends and seated grandstands along the sidelines of the pitch. I think I've been in every section over the years and you always get a good view.
It's a bit out of the town centre but easily walkable in fairness and there is plenty of parking, though not immediately outside.
If you are anywhere near the area on a big match day you should definitely take in a game, even if it is a smaller club match, the stadium is so rich in history and tradition that you should call in. Tipperary are one of the most successful hurling counties in terms of senior championship wins. The people love their hurtling and I 'd be amazed if you didn't enjoy a visit to Semple.Written 15 March 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The water levels are just beginning to rise, but already the wintering birds are arriving. There were flocks of Lapwing, Wigeon, Teal and Shoveler on newly created ponds.Written 20 October 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Just a wonderful place that ends up being a collection of local musicians on a Weds night. “The Monk” is the owner and a local legend. “Puddly” is a member of the staff and a delightful gent who will make you feel straight at home and ease. A terrific fella to be sure. All and all, a splendid pub that should not be missed.
