- MarcioHaraguchiSao Paulo, SP1,050 contributionsYou have two options to get to the top of the Urca Hill. The traditional is by the cable car, but you can also take the easy trail thta starts somewhere in the middle of Claudio Coutinho´s walk (it begins at the left side of the beach).
There you will find some options of food and snacks.
With some luck, you will see planes landing on the Santos Dummont airport maneuvering just a couple of hundreds meters in from of you. We were approached by a sales lady who offered a van service that would take us on top of the visitor center and include two additional viewpoint for R50 each person round trip, so we agreed to it. The van service took us to this great view of Rio - it’s about half way to visitor center. Then it drove us the visitor center afterwards. - Random Chinese Guy67 contributionsOverall, Vermelha Beach aka the red beach is an underrated beach with amazing views and is another worthwhile place to visit for those in the area.
It is literally within walking distance of the Sugarloaf cable car, and could be a nice place to check out before or after going up the mountain.
Compared to more popular beaches like Copacabana and Ipanema, it calmer and more relaxing vibe. Vendors aren't as aggressive and the beach is even quieter on weekdays.
It also doesn't hurt that it is located right next to a military base and police headquarter - perhaps giving the tourist an extra sense of security.

The mountain is a nice view and good value for the cable car ride up to the top and then over to Sugarloaf. The beach is very clean and small. There is a military base at the bottom of Mount Urca so it is about as safe as you can get. - PrestonGuildUnited Kingdom54,328 contributionsWe took a short walk as we visited the Sugar Loaf. The trail takes you to a scenic green part up to the first part of the sugar loaf mountain. You get to see some wildlife.
However the trail soon gets strenuous and you need to be fit and have suitable clothing.

However, it still keeps its amazing elegance through its plants, gardens intertwined woth the Guanabara Bay and its express road, worh cliffs and buildings on the other side. It is cheap entrance or you can go on the free day, check the website for updated info (things always change). The most interesting parts is the giant painting called "A Pátria" that represents the beginnings of Brazil as a republic. At the top of the palace you can enter the room where Presidente Getúlio Vargas committed suicide and even see the pajamas on display in a glass cabinet. NOTE : the Urca Hill trail is different from the exposed (although easy) and technical climbing route that goes right to the top of Sugar Loaf. Even the house's furniture is not there. It is an amazing exposition of art pieces, that is all. - victor d41 contributionsThis mall is located in a middle class neighborhood near the train station and the beach. Well located. It has many floors and on the last floor , there is a balcony where you can see a fanstastic view of Botafogo. The backdrop of Botafogo beach is terrific!!
