I suggest to go with the little train and book online at least the day before to avoid surprises. Do not go with bad weather, it would be a waste.
The view of Rio is Beautiful and the monument fantastic. The trees, the birds, amazing! - MarcioHaraguchiSao Paulo, SP1,050 contributionsYou have two options to get to the top of the Urca Hill. The traditional is by the cable car, but you can also take the easy trail thta starts somewhere in the middle of Claudio Coutinho´s walk (it begins at the left side of the beach).
There you will find some options of food and snacks.
With some luck, you will see planes landing on the Santos Dummont airport maneuvering just a couple of hundreds meters in from of you. We were approached by a sales lady who offered a van service that would take us on top of the visitor center and include two additional viewpoint for R50 each person round trip, so we agreed to it. The van service took us to this great view of Rio - it’s about half way to visitor center. Then it drove us the visitor center afterwards. - Luca MNew York City, NY531 contributionsFot the tips about security and robberies, please check online. My perception was that if you go without phone and credit cards, but with swim suit with zip keeping with you few cas, you should be fine.
For the rest, go there late in the afternoon before the sunset. Walk on the beach and see all the brazilians playing football listening to samba music. Go to La murete to admire the violet and orangish sunset drinking a good caipirinha.
The morning, check when is the sunrise e go there... It is the most beautiful fire in the sky i have ever see. I went with my girlfriend in Jan 2022. We ubered to the base of Vidigal and then got a mototaxi for R5 each to the base of the trail. They knew what we were coming for and there were about 20 guys there. They look like they primarily take people who live in the favela up to their houses. At the base of the trail there was a guy who made us pay an additional R5 each to get on the trail. It felt off the books and we protested, but we don’t speak portugese and then didn’t really mind paying one more dollar.
The hike was beautiful. We had views of Rochina off the back of the trail and then incredible views of the whole city, Christ the Redeemer, Lagoa, Leblon and Ipanema once at the top.
On the way down we started walking down because the taxis don’t wait at the base, but waved down two mototaxis quickly and they returned us to the base.

Next to Ipanema Beach , Leblon Beach is directly connected to it. This is the upper class neighborhood. The beach is wide, always clean ( Rio has special Beach Cleaning Crews, Dressed in a green uniform ) . Come early when it is not too crowded. - SellestBushey, UK4,649 contributionsOk, it does get a bit crowded here, so trying to get photos without other tourists in is a bit difficult, but, what a beautiful place. I loved the colours and the overall effect of the tiles. I enjoyed looking at the different tiles and what they depicted and represented and, yes, with a little bit of patience (and I was in no rush - after all I was on holiday) I did manage to get some good photos. - Toshi N5 contributionssome people are unaware of this attraction, even because it is not advertised as it belongs to the Brazilian army! The prices are ridiculously low but the visit even for foreigners is very surprising. Canhoes from the time of the first war and the view of the beach from another angle are worth the visit. - Random Chinese Guy67 contributionsOverall, Vermelha Beach aka the red beach is an underrated beach with amazing views and is another worthwhile place to visit for those in the area.
It is literally within walking distance of the Sugarloaf cable car, and could be a nice place to check out before or after going up the mountain.
Compared to more popular beaches like Copacabana and Ipanema, it calmer and more relaxing vibe. Vendors aren't as aggressive and the beach is even quieter on weekdays.
It also doesn't hurt that it is located right next to a military base and police headquarter - perhaps giving the tourist an extra sense of security.
