Amazing atmosphere and air! Take a water, comfortable clothes, some food and enjoy your walking all around - especially in a remote paths of the park.

It might not look very special on the outside, but the inside is amazing! The enviroment inside is very calming and they have a huge variety of books, sadly though, I do not speak Russian, so I could not read these. They have free WiFi, however you need a Russian phone number to sign in to the network. In fact, Vyborg has been during centuries Finnish or Swedish, and you can see this fact in the old buildings of the old town. In fact, ot seems more an Escandinavian city than a Russian one. So, it is very interesting walk around the streets, eat or drink something in restaurant or bars (especially in traditional Escandinavian restaurants) and visit the historical museum and some other important buildings like Round Tower, the Hermitage Vyborg or the ruins of the Old Cathedral and Vyborg Castle. - Takarasina2,111 contributionsVaryazhsky Dvor means Viking's Yard in Russian but it actually has another - and by far simpler a name - Svargas which is translated from Indo-European as Sunny Sky.
This is a purely private project which is sixteen years old. Their life has been tough - constant fight with local red tape and corruption, volatile cash-flow and even a direct arson attack from hostile competitors. They were burnt virtually to ashes (!!!) and reconstructed the whole thing with their own hands! (One can still see charred walls on the second (English - first) floor.
To understand what goes on there please read a review by the guy from Vermont. I'd only add that you can also try a smashing old-style lunch there - Vikings' cabbage or pea (no rubbish cream!) soup and home-made ham hock (Haxe, Eisbein) with potatoes. But - attention! - this service is oursourced so please get in touch with the complex in advance and bear in mind that if the guys are missing there'll be absolutely no opportunity to even have a snack there. So mind it in the course of your planning. But if they ARE there then first thing to do upon arrival should be approaching them and making an order. Then go to their smithy, throw axes, shoot a bow, try chainmail and other medieval haute couture stuff, etc. 'coz in an hour the meals will be ready and you won't have to wait.
Their parking is rather modest and this should be taken into account as well.
And toilets... Mind-blowing smell. Get ready for a simple obsolete outhouse. Very disappointing.

We try to visit this place, but pitifully it was in works, when we arrived (November-2018). - PerilsofpalaverBethesda, MD629 contributionsThe museum is a work in progress, organized and maintained by a group of enthusiasts interested in both Vyborg's history and the Winter War. As of June 18, the museum featured a pretty massive diorama (which was not there when I last visited about a year ago). The tour guide/director is a true history buff, speaking excellent English. The two highlights for me were the small but growing section on women's role in the Great Patriotic War and a hands-on exhibit of the most common small arms of WWII.

It is a museum related with the big Hermitage in St. Petersburg, but it is smaller. In fact, we visited all in about 1h. In OpenstreetMap bunkers and paths are drawn in detail. Take a flashlight, in many bunkers you can climb inside. At north bank of lake Zhelannoe you can stay in a tent or take a dip.
To this area you can come from Lyaypisuo station or highway or by bicycle from Gavrilovo station. There is a good bakery and a lot of (to my western eyes) hilarious t-shirts of Putin undertaking heroics. We spent about 30 minutes here, which was plenty. History says that the statue was made by Jussi Mäntynen and this one made out of bronze was the first one to be installed in 1928. The elk is in realistic size and almost 4 meters. The sculptor got the inspiration for his elk statues from the Hiisi elk from Kalevala. Our large suite on the Viking Sea did not lack one creature comfort. The ships cabin attendants and front line service people in all areas were the best. However, unlike any other ship we have sailed on, the management staff was either non existent or non communicative.
The ship’s itinerary was changed at the the last minute causing us skip Slovenia and spend too much time in Venice. In addition, one of our other excursions was canceled and we were not notified until we boarded the ship.
Finally fellow passengers noted what we did…several of the excursion descriptions were confusing or outright inaccurate.
We are 65 but the demographic on board Viking is much older. Therefore, the excursions were conducted at glacial speed and the whole boat was just too quiet for us.
