Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Hagia Sophia was beautiful and a fascinating historical site to see. And it was very much a must see when I went for free in November 2023. But I’m not sure I’d pay the new entrance fee (25 Euro) to go again.

The dimly lit ambiance, coupled with the mesmerizing reflection of the Medusa heads in the still waters, created an atmosphere that was both eerie and breathtaking.

The sheer magnitude of the cistern, with its impressive forest of ancient columns, left us in awe of the architectural genius of the past. The soft ripple of water and the haunting melody of classical music played in the background added an ethereal touch to the entire experience.

The Basilica Cistern is a must-visit destination in Istanbul for those seeking a unique and awe-inspiring journey through history. I suggest a skip the line pass or have a guide when you go when it's very busy.

Most important information about this mosque (which is very person) is the fact that this mosque was commissioned by the unflagging Fatih Sultan Mehmed ll who conquered Constantinople at the age of 21 and brought an end to the Byzantine empire. Be advised that in order to obey the Almighty, you must take off your shoes and if you are a woman I STRONGLY advice you bring a scarf for yourself when planing to visit this mosque because you will need to wrap your hair before entering and you do not and I repeat you do not want to use those blue ones you will see others using….. they are so so dirty!!!!Be informed!! It’s a huge mosque and it costs no money to visit. Enjoy

If in Istanbul, this is a must visit mosque, quite beautiful in a wonderful setting with views outside of the Bosporus. Inside it’s beautiful and the tombs of sultans are kept in the mausoleum outside buildings which are wonderfully set with gorgeous Iznik tiles.

If you can stay in the Sultanahmet, do. Istanbul’s main historical and cultural attractions are in this compact district which is easy to explore

Topkapi Palace has a lot to offer in terms of history and simply just to showcase the grandeur of life during the Ottoman times. To visit this place, you need at least 3-4 hours to visit every gallery in the palace, preferably in the morning.

This is perfect for those who love history because each corner and item displayed really brings you back in time plus giving you all the historical information you need to be educated about this era.

A huge palace on the edge of the Bosphorus. The hand workmanship and decoration were wonderful. There is an incredible crowd at the entrance, but tickets can be easily purchased and you can visit systematically. We had our guide, but they offer the opportunity to visit Dolmabahçe Palace with their own guides.

Unfortunately the tower was closed for refurbishment so we didn’t get the full experience. Lots of lovely shops and restaurants in the area so still a magnificent sight!

Very interesting and free place to visit. Although there were many visitors, the park is big enough that people spread out, so it feels more peaceful than the rest of the city. There’s a lot to see. Also great views of the Bosporus at one end

I lived in Turkey for 30 months and was a group of friends were allowed to take a tour of Istanbul over a two day weekend in 1976. Kariye was one of three Mosques that were included in our tour trip. We were told at the time that it was used as the women's church. Was amazed and thrilled that such a small church could contain so much beauty and love towards their faith. At the time, photos were forbidden, but I did purchase a page of slides that were sold by vendors at a stall located near Hagia Sophia. I am especially pleased that the Turkish people and their government is doing all that is possible to preserve it and return it to its full glory. It was beautiful in 1976; upon completion of the repairs it will be magnificent.
