Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Amazing views above the clouds at the volcano summit. It's a little rough getting up there--I recommend a tour. Lots of good info and great views of the night sky.

Traveling, north from Kona, past the great resorts of the Big Island’s Kohala Coast, you’ll be enchanted by the glorious coastline. The drive takes you through the little town of Hawi, close to the birthplace of King Kahmehameha I, who was the great monarch to unite the Islands in his Kingdom. There is a magnificent statue of the King prominently placed in the town. Proceeding onwards to the end of the road, you reach Pololu Valley. For those of a hiking disposition, you can make your way to the dandy floor. The view of the valley and the coastline from the roadway is certainly worth a gasp and a picture or two. Well worth a morning’s ride Drive home by way of Paniolo Country - the Ranch and Cowboy lands - to the little town of Waimea. Enjoy!

Spectacular views from the lookout. Road was very steep and wouldn't recommend without an AWD. It was steep hike (difficult heading down and then obviously back up).

This was so awesome! We finally made the night view after being there 3 times during the day. Just amazing and my kids loved it, even needed a potty break all the way back to the porta-potty's and wanted to walk all the way back! I was asked a few times if it was worth it, absolutely!!

The staff was very educational for participants and the time with the dolphins was truly amazing. Very glad we did this.

This place is amazing!! We stayed at the military camp and the trail for viewing was right across the street. We got photos of the lava at night and it glowed! The steam vents are all around on both sides of the highway. I can't imagine how it must have been for residents of Hawaii during the lava flow. My heart goes out to the people who lost their houses.

Driving the Chain of Craters Road was definitely a highly of my trip to Volcanoes NP. We drove the road from the visitors center to the end. It was amazing seeing the lava fields as far as the eye can see. Not only that but there were beautiful views of the ocean. There are many places to stop along the road and other attractions. It was a very scenic drive!

It is certainly a strenuous walk down and back out to this bay but the snorkelling is well worth it. Definitely the best amount of coral and fish i saw anywhere on big island. There are plenty of boat tours that can take you there but the walk in is definitely worth doing if you want to experience on your own.

Like the volcano, I think your experience is all going to be based on timing. It was a clear night and we were able to see constellations very clearly. However, the moon was way too bright to allow us to see any difference in the Milky Way, compared to where we we could see it from our lodging in Pahoa.

The drive up was super easy (and much easier than Haleakala) but we did not drive all the way to the top of the summit. Luckily, we had no issues acclimating.

Flying out of Kona, it was cool to be able to see Mauna Kea from the plane and be able to see where we were the night before.

This was amazing - you hike down and then across the Iki crater, getting a unique perspective. Hike does have some strenuous parts, but overall not too bad and a lot of fun!!

I wish I had paid more attention when they were talking about the octopus. It felt like there was a lot to learn from knowledgeable people. I was too distracted trying to touch an octopus. It would have been nice if they had taken an actual break to reduce distractions. I know this is challening, but it would also have been nice to limit the number of groups on the tour to the same number of tanks. We could move between the tanks to interact with different octopuses. But it felt like there was 2 or 3 too many groups so a couple groups of people were always on the outside. In the end everyone crowds around the octopus that is being interactive so I guess it doesn't totally matter. Overall, I enjoyed it and would probably do it again.
The gift shop had lots of fun stickers, but I wish they had postcards!

This was pretty cool - the hike was mad fun. We hiked there (around 3 miles of the funkiest windy, sandy trails) & caught one of the 4x4's back, because we wanted to do both. The beach - a little semi-circle of paradise! I went with my best friend who is a geologist & explained the green comes from olivine (a mineral) & unfortunately the photos just don't capture it, but imagine olive green sand. One of the few places on earth. An added benefit of hiking up & driving back is you get to stay as long as you like.

IT GETS REAL HOT: If you're hiking be sun smart, SPF was 11 the day we went & be sure to bring enough water.

A NOTE ABOUT THE 4X4 TRAIL: Costs $20 return, per person. If you get motion sickness - bring something for it if you plan to take the 4x4. It's a bumpy ride, but the locals are real pros! (You stand up in the back of a pickup & hold on for your life)

HIKE DIFFICULTY: I notice people are saying this hike is difficult, I disagree if you're sun smart otherwise you'll fry & get dehydrated for sure. There is no climbing involved in the actual hike, just on the way down - which everyone does & there is a staircase.

You need a flashlight and good shoes, not flip flops. There’s a steep set of stairs and then there are two caves. Your cellphone flashlight isn’t strong enough to go too far into the cave. Enter at your own risk. Park across the street. They have a small restroom available too. Free admission.

We came up with the Hawaii Forest & Trails group, and were able to do a little stargazing, although the weather was horrid on our day. Next time we're on the Big Island we'll definitely go up again. Wow, the stars are so bright without all the light pollution!

Waipio Valley in Hawaii is possibly the best view in the States. I've traveled a lot around America and was absolutely blown away by the beauty of this place. The beach, cliffs, ocean, everything. I so wish I could go down to the valley, at least the lookout is open. I was here for about 20 minutes and it was sunny at first then started to pour rain so I got great photos of the two scenarios. Beautiful place and well worth a visit.
