I decided on impulse to hop on a flight from Oahu on December 1, 2022 to get a chance to see an active eruption (and it turned into a double eruption of both Mauna Loa and Kilauea!), and this tour was the best choice I could have made to make that happen. I am so so pleased with Wasabi Tours and will enthusiastically recommend it to anyone who wants a fun, comfortable, and informative all-inclusive experience on the Big Island.
It's 100% worth it to to take this tour rather than rent a car and spend half your time getting lost or not knowing how to deal with road closures - and to get all the fun history and culture information that enhances every site you visit! (Notice the bumper-to-bumper rental cars on Saddle Road in the foreground of the volcano photo? Yeah, we weren't stuck in that mess and got to stop and take pictures instead!)
We saw every single highlight spot on the itinerary, and also got to enjoy bonus stops like a local bakery and an echoing crater along Chain of Craters Drive in Volcanoes National Park. We rode in comfort in an immaculate Sprinter van, and the company even provided snacks, jackets, binoculars, and umbrellas to make sure we didn't get affected by the weather.
By committing to do a long tour that extends into the night-time, you get to marvel at a completely different view of the volcanoes and see so many more stars than you do in light-polluted metropolitan areas. It's absolutely worth every minute! With lunch and dinner both included in the cost of the tour, this tour simply can't be beat!
Our guide Dreu was incredible - he has a wealth of knowledge and takes advantage of every opportunity to get an extra glimpse or add an extra point of interest to the tour. Door to door, it was about 12 hours, but Dreu's dedication to making us feel comfortable and keeping the experience fresh at every stop made the time go by so quickly! We learned about history, culture, geology, and even some night-time photography tricks so we got awesome shots of ourselves with lava glow. He's a master storyteller, and helped us get the most in-depth understanding of each site by providing context (accessible to all levels of familiarity with Hawaiian culture) and humor to keep us engaged. MASSIVE mahaloz to Dreu for his thoughtfulness, hard work, and aloha spirit!
