Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A must stop on the Big Island.
A National Park Historic Site, but also a sacred spot.
This “place of refuge” provided protection and redemption to defeated warriors and other disgraced persons who were able to make it there. The Kahuna provided guidance to help them rejoin society.
There is a peaceful, serene vibe there. You can still feel it.
We also got to see a sea turtle and brightly colored fish in an alcove on the shore.

Great views, nice swimming area although the beach is rocky so we didn’t go in. We were one of the only cars there (weekday, mid-afternoon) and did a short self-guided tour using the trail maps located at the front of the park. I wish there was more information but there were basic explanations showing old canoe storage areas, houses, and salt-making stations (see photo). There were picnic benches so we took a lunch break there.

Very interesting and educational historical park. Tours are given several times a day or an app is available if you'd prefer to do it yourself. Allow 1-2 hours.

Great stop, great history and beautiful place! Do the audio tour! Very glad we were able to make it here, my boys loved it. Half hour to see it all, and the gift shop is great. The ranger was awesome and did a great job with my boys; completing the book and getting their badge. We really enjoyed our time...and its right by the beach! Perfect!

Understood but disappointed the lava tube was closed to visitors. Know it's hit or miss on visibility of lava in the crater but would have been nice to see more than steam.

I heard about this place but we drove past it the first time. Not marked on the maps but I had printed a google map of the location. Not too far from the Hilina pali Road. Parking is ont he side of the Chain Of Craters Road. Some might say its just a big hole in the ground.
