This was an excellent activity to do with our young kids - ages 7 & 9. The tour is under an hour and it is located at a hotel in the middle of San Ignacio. The experience is located inside the iguana habitat (so out of the sun). We were able to touch the iguanas and have the babies crawl all over us! Highly recommend for a fun, easy morning or afternoon activity.

A beautiful site! All the areas are accessible and able to be climbed. A great introduction to the Mayan culture and ruins. Mostly self guided with only a few spots with summaries. Close to the amenities of St Ignacio and reasonably priced. Fantastic way to spend a few hours… don’t forget the bug spray!

We stopped here partly because it was close to the Lodge at Chaa Creek where we were staying. The gardens are well marked and are fairly large. They give you a map and a booklet with lots of information about the various plants. It’s very informative but I was a little disappointed that there were few flowers or flowering plants.

It’s definitely worth a visit if you are nearby.

First place saw us with a private guide and we paid over the odds for some bananas, next place was 1Bz for 8 excellent bananas which is amazing value.

Oranges were great too watermelon really lacks flavour.

Friendly stall owners who don’t hassle you so enjoyable 5 mins

I visited Walters art studio with my parents and son. My mom has been a longtime fan of his work so we reached out to Walter to see if we could stop by one Sunday afternoon. He and his partner welcomed us into their home and he showed us his studio and elaborated on his creative process, shedding light into his wondrous mind and how his artistic style has evolved over the years. We truly enjoyed our time. They even took the time to show my son the animals in the yard and gave us eggs from the chickens. Was a Sunday afternoon well spent! Highly recommend if you’re a lover of the arts.

The museum is interesting, with information about local species and some Mayan history. The most fun is the butterfly room where butterflies land on you and we learned about their breeding project.

I found it really interesting to walk through this mostly unrestored and unexcavated site. It does have maintained trails that make it easy to walk through and around the ruins.

Due to some crime in the vicinity, I was actually warned against going here by my hotel, and they said they have stopped doing birding tours in the area because of that crime for the time being. Due to that, I was the only visitor there that day (maybe that week!). Also due to the crime potential (it's very near the border with Guatemala is part of the problem, apparently), I was required to pay extra to have a guard or guide accompany me as I explored
