Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

An impressive pedagogic museum but that is not completely updated on the human development
It is situated in an impressive building as seems to be the standard in this city. It is very pedagogic throughout and really tries to catch the interest of children and everyone else. The only exception is the section with local birds in the entrance floor. These dusty birds must have been there since the nineteenth century. I especially appreciated how they showed the transformation from a kind of from a land-living mammal into a vale. However, my favourite topic is the human development. Also, this part was very well created. I especially liked the part of a neandertal funeral. Another thing that caught my eyes was the bronze statues of different humans caught in different activities. However, I was surprised and disappointed that the research frontiers that have moved very quickly the last decades was not incorporated. Especially, there was no information at all about the Denisovan man. Still that finding was published already in 2010. Neither was there any of that the human development cannot be show as a simple tree structure anymore since we now know there are intermittent mixing with more primitive humans over the years.

Great museum. Even from the outside!
Explains much of the history of African and African American people since slavery began up to current influence in American culture.
Very interesting and good for everyone to better understand the US culture and history.
And to help reduce discrimination and try to avoid these atrocities.

The Capitolium building on top of its hill is really a sight. A visit to Capitolium must be planned well in advanced since you must book a slot several weeks ahead to be sure. The guided tour includes the crypta, that is the basement level just under the rotunda, the rotunda under the dome, the old session room for the Supreme Court and the statue room. And if you are lucky another one or two rooms. Before the tour an information film is shown. There are many different groups at the same time, and even if you hear your own guide well it is very high noise level from all the other groups in the background. The fact that almost all the rooms are just made of stone make them very beautiful but also very noisy. The rotunda was of course the highlight of the tour with all the very nice paintings of historic events. We liked the tour a lot. Be certain not to miss the cafeteria, the sweets are delicious especially the dome shaped white chocolate pastry.

The building is very beautiful and impressing as many of the museum buildings in this city. A special attraction is the internal waterfall in the middle of the entrée. I liked that a lot, and in itself it was worth the visit to this museum. The art was impressive and had many masterpieces. You must spend at least two hours to give them full credit. This is one of the best, we have visited six, museums in this city and can be highly recommended.

A very emotionally moving experience. So very sad to see the horrific torture of innocent people. A part of history everyone should see to remind us that Evil lives around us

Very nice place and Library to walk around, look and see. Impresive hall, stairs and place for 'readers'. It has an example of Gutenberg's Bible.

Had a great time here! I've always been big into the history of aviation and being able to walk around and see the planes was awesome

I don't normally enjoy art museums, but this has an element of history that makes it a must-see for me.

Did a incredible job with every aspect and all details. Beautifully and wonderfully done in every way.

    The museum just has little bit of everything.;
    History
    Technology
    Information
    Artifacts
    Artistry
    Multimedia
    Video
    Hands on

To go through all of you need an entire day. There is just a lot. Probably need more than one visit. Depends how much you read about each exhibit or artifact .

Learn and see it all from the beginning until present day . Top floor has moving/rotating special exhibits.

This was a great experience and well worth the money. I would have liked more time in the museum, we were told the talk would start so rushed through to be told it started in 15 mins. By that time I decided not to go back as my time had been disrupted. Talk from guide was good. Definitely would recommend. Again buying tickets from the uk was easy.

We visited late morning on a Monday. No line to get in and staff were very friendly. We did a self guided tour, plenty of information on the printed map and brochure.

There's a decent Cafe on the grounds. Good place to grab a light lunch before heading back downtown.

If you want to partake in an inside tour, book prior to travelling; advanced reservations are required. Then, be sure to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your time to get through security and to obtain your ticket/label inside. By memory drinks are not allowed so empty those drink bottles prior to reaching the security point. Depending on the time of day the line to security can be quite long and it is outside so be sure to have a hat if sunny and hot. The tour is excellent. It begins with a video documenting the history of the Capitol Building with an American audience in mind, and this is followed by a tour led by a guide. Put your headphones on immediately so that you can hear your guide as there are multiple tours happening at any on time. My tour guide was very knowledgeable and open to questions. There is not a lot of time spent in any one space so be sure to have your camera ready to take photos as there is no going back. Well worthwhile.

  • PROS
    • Beautiful exhibits
    • Very green and verdant
    • Relaxing and refreshing
    • Bubbling water outside
    • Great and surprising location
    • Easy access to other “stuff” such as our U.S. Capitol

    CONS
    • Hot and humid inside the tropical forest

    “I VISITED THIS PLACE”…
… because I suggested the idea to Mrs. Place and Sister Place, since they were coming with me on one of my runs through everything that there is to see and do at our National Mall.

As for me, I split the time also viewing our nation’s Capitol Building (from as close as permitted) and discovering and exploring the James A. Garfield and Ulysses S. Grant statues- you can see my reviews and “helpful” photos of those three attractions.

    TIPS
This place is unusual and unexpected to find here- it is definitely worth a visit, so go there.

Hillwood Estate houses an impressive and beautiful collection of Russian, French, and English objects of art and furniture.

We arrived at opening as walk ins, and spent an hour and a half walking around the beautiful, well maintained grounds and visiting the current Princess Grace dress exhibit. You can make your tour reservation online. After the home tour, we visited the cafe. We didn’t realize we should have made reservations there as well because they were full, but it was no problem because the to-go window was perfect! We spent almost three and a half hours enjoying the estate and resting at lunch.

There is a lot of shade and places to rest. There are elevators as well for those who need it.

Hillwood Estate participates in the Blue Star Museums program which runs through Labor Day. My family and I very much appreciated the complimentary access to the home and grounds.

I had been planning to visit this place for years and don’t know why I waited so long. What a hidden gem! I highly recommend visiting!
