Great selection of craft and regular beers, chilled out and friendly vibe and staff were very friendly and engaging. - Brigitte R1 contributionWe chose the Three Jolly Pigeons from our Britstops/Irish-stops guide as a good place stop over night with our "convoy" of 2 campervans. It was convenient on our route from Connemara to Dublin. Seamus McCormack before we arrived had advised us where to eat locally. We enjoyed good criach in the bar with the locals who were on form on a Friday and Seamus filled us in on the history of the pub which had been in his family for 90 years. The association with Oliver Goldsmith and the "She stoops to conquer" was explained and Seamus quoted verbatim from some of his work. In the morning the landlord kindly provided us with coffee and more potted history plus a some economic thoughts as he used to lecture in economics in UCD. All courses were great and the sommelier gave good advice. There was a band setting up so we did not stay around for that, just not my thing. The cons.
Limited parking, its next to the busy road linking Athlone to the South (so keep kids close), and no food options (presently) aside from snack food
The Pros.
Recent extension to the pub internally but charm retained. Now warm and comfortable. A few quiet corners to conduct social business but can accommodate a good crowd and regularly does at weekends.
The real Pro...
Niall, now the publican for over a year, has reinstated this pub as the centre of local life. Once famous for a good Guinness, Niall has a warm welcome to locals and commuters alike. Good Guinness (and a wider range of drink options) again guaranteed.
Martins wont compete with Urban pubs for crowds, but, given its setting, it is more than the sum of its parts. Keep up the good work Niall.
Looking forward to many more visits.
