Clean sea, safe for families, sensible prices in all the beachside cafes, a very low key but charming place in which to relax.

We found little reliable information in English on the GTE and were quite confused before starting. Some of the websites were hopeless and would have added kms of walking and hundreds of metres is ascent/descent if we had followed their advice. We completed the walk in September 2018 and I hope that this information will help you approach the walk with more confidence and knowledge than we did.
The GTE is a 'Y' shaped walk. It runs from Cavo to Monte Capanne where it splits into a NW variant and a SW variant.
At the ferry terminal in Piombino and the Np office in Portoferraio a 1:25000 map and guide book are available for about 10 euro. Nice to have but not really necessary as the path is so well marked with one major exception ( see below ).
As Elba has an excellent bus system it is possible to do the GTE as a series of day walks radiating out from Portoferraio which is what I will outline here. The path is very steep in places, Elba can be very hot and humid so to do this walk carrying a fully loaded backpack is either masochistic or silly.
    Day One.
Early morning bus to Cavo. Timetables vary due to tourist seasons but are available on line or at the bus transport office in Portofefdaio. From Cavo moderate four hour ascent following well marked path to Cuore Fiore where food and drinks are available. Very easy three hour descent on well marked and well formed paths to Casa di Marchetti where the GTE cuts the main road back to Portoferdaio. Bus stop about 20m away.
    Day Two.
Bus back to Casa di Marchetti. Very easy, relatively flat four hour walk along well marked easy to follow paths. You will hit the main road at Colle di Proccio where there is a bus stop and regular bus back to Portoferraio.
    Day Three.
Bus back to Colle di Proccio. Approx four hour ascent to the bifurcation where the trail splits. This has the only poorly marked section due to one missing sign. So many people have gone wrong, including us, that the wrong path is the more obvious.. After about two hours you will come to a farm with numerous barking dogs. Shortly thereafter you will turn right up hill into a wooded area. This is where you need to be careful. Keep looking back for a finger post or if the signage disappears turn around. The path is obvious looking backwards. At Monte Capanne the trail splits. Pomonte the SW variant is about three hours away. The NW variant, which we didn't do another six to eight hours. The 'new.' GTE follows the ridge crest but the 'old' GTE now renumbered path 105? Turns left and follows the valley into Pomonte. This is very obvious from both the topographical map and the signage. At Pomonte you can take the bus back to Portoferrauo.

Capoliveri is in the Elba Island, in Tuscany. There are different and wonderful beaches. In the night you could walk in a beautiful scenario.

The beach is excellent. The food are very good and not too expensive. Easy drive, hard to park, but it really worth the effort.

Cable cars are not my favorite, but in this case I was glad I did. The view from the top is amazing. You can see the island, clouds are passing by, fantastic. It is also possible to hike to the top (and back).

It was a pleasure to spend one week at La Lecciola. Giulia and Simon are amazing hosts. The atmosphere is very friendly and family oriented in a marvelous typical Elba landscape.
You can benefit from bio-products coming directly from their farm, including the white vermentino wine, for a very reasonable and economic price.
The house is situated at walking distance from Rio Marina (the harbour) and Rio nell Elba and very closed to other turistic places in Elba and the uncanny beaches.
Giulia and Simone will give you piece of advice regarding any activity you would like to do: for us they helped us to organise a trekking to the mountain, visit to La Pianosa, a barely inhabitated island closeby, as well as scubba diving.
Grazie Giulia and Simon for the stunning time at your place!

I'm deeply in love with my beautiful Italy. This is the Elba Island, in Tuscany. Wonderful sea. This island hosted Napoleon during his exile.

We visited Museo delle Miniere di Capoliveri and also took the Safari in Miniera tour for only 20 euros each. The tour included time at the museum before we jumped into the ex military Jeep for a joy ride around the steep paths in the mountains. It was breath taking and our guide Aldo explained the history, minerals, mining methods and took us prospecting. Fantastic couple of hours! The drive in is a slow 30km per hour on a winding coastal road with beautiful views so allow time for this.
