- Melanie M61 contributionsParked at the base of the mountain, space for 5 cars just before the turning area. Go through village of Dufton and turn left. Path is clear all the way up, is wonderful when the view of the valley comes into view. We walked up to the top of the center point of the valley , high cup plain. En route great photo opportunity of Nichol chair a distinctive rock formation . Lovely flat grassy picnic area at the top and was very still when we visited. View of the river in valley bottom is spectacular. We descended same way but is possible to do a loop circlular including Murton Fell if you’re feeling fitWritten 10 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - OwenthomasBerthoud, CO1,009 contributionsThe upper floor is still used for that and the lower level is the tourist information office. Some nice souvenirs and books and maps. The people working there were extremely friendly and helpful. George Washington’s father and two step brothers attended school just down the road from here. It is located right in the town center.Written 1 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Emma HRotherham, UK59 contributionsLovely little cafe and gallery through a tunnel, a courtyard and up wooden steps.
Everyone was very friendly, and we had lovely coffee and cake.
Was a lovely place to stumble upon for a break on a long journey.Written 24 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It was so peaceful, the waterfall was quite full but once the doors and windows were closed, you could not hear it at all. The mill itself has everything you need for a great stay, everything about it is quality, and looks like it belongs in there. Ok the microwave and dishwasher are modern but that adds to your comfort. Both levels of the mill are open plan, there is a gorgeous slipper bath in the bedroom area, sadly we didnt not use it as I was afraid of getting stuck in it due to my mobility, well my age :-).
This is not your normal holiday cottage, its so very special.
The red squirrels came as close as 10 ft away from the glass doors. We saw dippers, wrens, robins, chaffinches, dunnocks, even a grey heron, but it was the red squirrels that caught our eyes.
We had a meal in Appleby at one of the pubs, it was lovely and the staff were very friendly. One day we went to Edinburgh on the train for the day. Trains run from Appleby and connect at other stations. We had a great day there as well.
We will be staying there again in the future that's for sure.
We highly recommend this place, if you want peace and quiet, this is where to go.
The owners Jim and Jane are very helpful as well.Written 29 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. There is also a small chapel for them. Our cottage was the former communal hall for the almshouse. You are welcome to stroll through and go into their chapel in the corner. If you are lucky enough to visit with one of the women that live there, take the opportunity. Also walk out into the garden that goes all the way down to the river.Written 1 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Neshee25 contributionsThe Norman Keep is such an interesting place to visit. We cannot comment on the castle or accommodation as we did not visit or stay. However, the sheer fact that the Keep is in such amazing condition is spectacular. It is old, so please be careful of your footing however every attempt has been made to make this an informative and interesting place to see. The Keep has displays within in it which tell you about the history of the Keep and surrounding areas.
Such a great resource is clearly struggling with staffing but it is a good way to spend an hour or so when you are in Appleby.Written 29 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. They had box pews that still have their doors, and there was a unique sword rest above the mayor’s box pew. The church was flooded several times in the past 20 years, with the level of the most recent one flooding two feet of water in the church.Written 23 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Gareth F1 contributionWhat a fantastic pub!! We all had a fantastic day/night in here. The atmosphere was fantastic and everyone was friendly. Whether they were staff working, or visitors from afar.
The beer’s on offer were brilliant!! Fantastic selection!! We were even allowed to bring our take away food in (for when we got home) after a very enjoyable day!! Keep up the good work! 👍🏻Written 30 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
