We very much enjoyed exploring the island until we got snowed out. It is still a lovely walk in the winter, busier than I expected, but not too crowded to be annoying. We stopped for lunch at the excellent Adlerfelt restaurant (just because it was where we got hungry) and had the yummiest meal. Amazing melt in your mouth char and a delicious surprise beer porridge.

The fortress itself is nice to look at but some places are a bit of a mystery because there are no explanatory signs. We may have missed the info cos we skipped the museums.

Don't miss the biggest bell outside the church. It actually rings!!

This church is atypical but very pretty.
You have to pay at the entrance, but it’s worth it.
It isn’t like the other churches in the city.

Beautiful building, located in the city centre of Helsinki, you cannot miss it.
Apart from its core function, as a main transport hub in Helsinki, it is a must see touristic objective in the city due to its innovative architectural style, one of the best known of Finnish architecture.

Wow what a gem, if you like books and libraries you’ll love this place with its very old grand design. Free entry so well worth a look. It’s just opposite the main Cathedral behind Senate Square so very central location. Very friendly greeting on arrival, where you need to leave all coats and bags in free lockers and you pick up a free information guide.

This church is enormous in size and stands in it's own grounds off road. It's facade is staggering with pointed features in terracotta brick mixed with white stone surrounds. It's main front feature is it's two pointed steeples to each side with their large green peaks. To the sides are an array of little turrets white white stone points and huge glass windows. At the rear the same design continues but is rounded in shape. There's It's very simplistic and in complete contrast to it's extravagant exterior but magnificent none the less also a few different grand entrances with large steps and solid oak doors, above these are huge circular windows. There's also a pretty little seating area behind the church including large colourful flower bowls.
Inside it has wonderful large ceilings, massive pillars which evolve into arches on both sides the length of the church. The altar has a wood backdrop with a single mural, and behind it it is circular shaped with small pillars and arches.

I never went to a performance here and nor do I get to go inside as it was closed. However, if you are a lover of beautiful buildings and architecture then this is definitely worth seeing. It's made from large white stone with a terracotta roof. To it's facade it has two castle style steeples that have pointed terracotta roofs. There are three arched doorways with five smaller arches above which looks like a small balcony. The whole building has a great design and wonderful feel to it.

When the Ulrika Eleonora Church was demolished for the future site of Senate Square to build the Helsinki Cathedral the Old Church was constructed in 1826. All the plans were by the architect C.L. Engel himself, creator of the Neo Classical city center resembling St.Petersburg so much it has been used in Hollywood films. Built from heavy wooden logs after the Czar's orders most of the interior was moved from Ulrika Eleonora like the pulpit with gilded decorations dating back to 1726. A grander organ was later ordered and the plain cross substituted with Robert Ekman's altarpiece. Though the church was aimed to be temporary it is now the oldest in Helsinki and hasn't luckily never been burnt down.

This is classic late 19th Century design. A big stone building with very thick walls. We spotted it as we shopped in the downtown area. There are nice stores on the ground level. Looks almost like a castle.

At the large Senate square you not only find the Senate building, also the Palace of the Prime minister, the Dom Cathedral, as well as the main building of The Helsinki University and the Sederholm house, Bock House and the lovely Havis Amanda Statue.

The Bank of Finland displays its art collection to the public only once a year, the exhibition was now extended over three days as people have been queuing around the block. There is a long historical connection between finance and art in Finland as we had our own currency and banknotes designed by famous architect Eliel Saarinen before the independence from Russia. Established in 1811 the Bank has allways made its aim to collect living artists many of whom have become central figures in their field like Akseli Gallen-Kallela.

The great Art Nouveau palace by Gustav Nyström from 1900 has remained quite unaltered also indoors though different small businesses rent the space temporarily. Protected by law as a National Monument the half vacant red brick beauty has a better future ahead. Stora Enso paper mill company situated in the iconic Alvar Aalto "Sugarcube" nearby will build new imposing head quarters in wood at the waterfront and the general plan with public areas includes the prestigious old Customs House too.

Mäntyniemi is one of the three official residences of the President of Finland, besides the Presidential Palace next to the Market Square and the summer residence Kultaranta in Naantali.

When President Kekkonen fell ill in 1981, the official residence Tamminiemi was set aside for him. The Government decided to build a new Presidential residence in the Meilahti district of Helsinki. It was designed by renowned Finnish architects Reima and Raili Pietilä. The construction work was completed in 1993.

Four Finnish presidents have lived there: Mauno Koivisto, Martti Ahtisaari, Tarja Halonen, and Sauli Niinistö.

The residence is not open to public and very little can be seen from outside.
However, there is a beautiful Maila Talvio Park in front of the residence. Also, the Seurasaari Open-Air Museum is located nearby.

The impressive late 19th century palace at the corner of Diana Park held last the offices of the National Board of Customs. Now most of the block consisting of several interesting buildings from different architectural periods is under renovation. The window by the male statues belongs to the ashtonishing showroom of Skanno furniture company which is open for customers through the newly painted staircase.
