We stayed in Oulu for few days and we really wanted to see Northern Lights before our departure. Despite the weather conditions we managed to see them thanks to Thomas and his passion! We kept in touch for three days constantly looking for the best occasion and the last available night we were able to reach our goal. Thomas studied all the variables and drove far where the sky could have been less cloudy and he took us in a perfect and suggestive spot. He also taught me how to set up the camera and how to take pictures using the tripod.
He is a very kind, patient and friendly person, it was a pleasure spending some time with him. Thomas is also a great photographer and sent us some great pictures and explained also the aurora's scientific explanation.
It was an amazing experience and I highly recommend him!
Thank you so much Thomas, I hope to see you again in future.

Harri, the instructor in Oulu, he organised everything for me! At the very beginning, I wanted to go with a instructor in Rovaniemi because I was there at that moment, however, the instructor in Rovaniemi, called Antti, told me that the weather changed and the wind was not good for snowkiting, so I have to turn to another instructor, Juha Salmi, who works in Pallas and Ylläs, however told me the wind and views are all good, but no public transport for solo travellers. These wonderful and experienced instructors are super nice, thoughtful, understanding, and warm-hearted, and they are also extremely skilled and the ones who really know how to teach properly and professionally. Someone can be very skilful but this doesn’t mean he or she can teach. Harri, always considered the safety and taught me how to protect myself in his course. I really love his course and I truly recommend these supportive and responsible instructors for anyone who want to learn the sports in their course lists. They will never make you feel helpless and unsafe. They are reliable and deserve trust! what’s more, after my one-day training, Harri assessed my performance at the end of the course, he suggested me to continue the course when I go back to Nantes ( a French city), he also took videos and pictures for me to help my future instructor know what’s my level now and what I had learnt. I never met such a qualified and also so thoughtful and patient. I am so luck to have an instructor like him. He deserves tons of respect and appreciation. I think every learner will love such a nice instructor. When he teaches, he is like an elder brother and I feel like go with a family member. And I believe not only him, but also other instructors who I haven’t met, are also very nice as him.

My two friends and I visited Loihakka in November 2019. There was a lot of snow in Oulu at the times, but unfortunately not enough to go on a sleigh trip. But we still wanted to visit the husky farm, and I was a great experince!! Maja was a kind host, who told us ALL about the dogs. You can really tell, that this family loves their dogs. Maja could tell the names of all the dogs, when they where born and so on. She anwsered all of our questions with great patience and humor - not just about the huskies but about Finish culture as well :-)
We will have to come back another times to go on a sleigh trip!!

Koivuranta Sauna Ferry (Koivurannan saunalautta in Finnish) operates as a walk-in public sauna from the beginning of May to the end of September (adults 12 euros / 1.5 hours). The public wood-heated sauna is open every day and every evening if they haven't private events or public sauna ferry cruises. Most certainly the public sauna is open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Sundays. Check opening hours on their webpage. You don't need any prebooking if you are coming into the public sauna in the summer. Take your swimsuit with you because women and men use the same sauna. Besides, you may swim in the river.

Sometimes (about once a week) they have public sauna ferry cruises (2 hours, tickets 39 euros, children 30 euros). Prebooking is recommended. It is also possible to rent the whole sauna ferry for a private cruise.

If the sauna ferry is in the port, it operates as a public cafeteria. They specialize in fresh waffles which are very delicious. They also rent SUP boards, motor boats and floating AuroraHut igloos. Igloos are good both for staying overnight in the port (starting 149 euros/night) or for river hopping (265 euros/night). River hopping is available until October 14th. This must be an unforgettable experience!

We didn't rent the private sauna ferry or the floating igloo. We only enjoyed the public sauna and delicious waffles. Walking or biking from the city center to Koivuranta Sauna Ferry and back is a nice excursion. The riverside route is very nice. The distance from the market square is 3.3 kilometers in one way. Enjoy sauna and waffles and then walk or bike back to the city center. If the sauna ferry isn't in the port, there are a cafeteria named Koivurannan kahvila and a beach named Värtön uimaranta next to the port. So you can enjoy at least those facilities.

I really love having sauna in the excellent sauna of the sauna ferry. I will remember this during cold winter months!

We took the Nalikari tour at the suggestion of our guide, Kari. High quality bikes and gear, plus the fact that Kari sized the bikes to our heights made our ride comfortable and fun. A great mix of forest trails, groomed paths and beaches gave us a real taste of the area in and around Oulu. Kari is a friendly and outgoing guide, sharing a wealth of knowledge about the area and various sights along the way. I highly recommend this tour if you are in Oulu.

I went a little scare because I didn't know if I was going to be capable of resist the cold, but Tommy was really helpful and supportive during all the time, also he was a great host and help me to find other nice places to visit.
The ice experience was incredible and I needed to rent part of the gear because I couldn't transport all. They had really good quality of gear and good prize.
    My score 10/10

Wonderful little chocolate shop near Oulu city center. Chocolates are handmade on the site and you can also have a cup of coffee or tea there. Chocolates are amazing :)

Pasi was an incredible tour guide. I contacted Pasi about his new Northern Lights Tour two days prior to see if he was available and I am so happy he was! Not only did he pick me up from my hotel, but he had fun adventures planned while we waited for the lights to show. We snow skiid on a frozen sea (he was very patient in teaching me), snow shoed though the forest where we saw a very clear sky and many beautiful stars, and had tea/coffee and cookies during a break. Given that seeing the lights is not guaranteed...just having these experiences along with Pasi's company made the tour amazing in and of itself. Pasi is very knowledgeable about the lights, nature, and has a great intuition so at the end of the tour...we saw the lights! It was so beautiful and he made sure to get pictures of the sky and of me with the lights in the background. It was amazing to get that bucket list item checked off! I very strongly recommend Pasi as a tour guide!

We prefer to vacation without a rental car, but enjoy nature outside the city, so this tour was the perfect choice. Hanna was early to pick us up, and drove us to the woods near Oulu while answering our questions about northern Finland. Sometimes after a vacation I feel like I've been so busy that I need a vacation to recover from my vacation, but spending time in nature was restorative. Hanna explained how she leads walks in the woods, so we knew what to expect. The scenery was beautiful, the air smelled incredibly fresh, and the breeze blowing through the treetops was soothing. It was nice to spend quiet time in nature, followed by a few minutes of talking near the lake. I didn't want it to end. We cannot recommend this tour highly enough. The walk was not strenuous, but does require some balance and stability over tree roots. If you like peace and quiet in nature, this is for you.

Before we went we saw a UK birders Facebook photos all the Owls on the Oulu trip, with Pygmy and Tengmalms at the boxes, and thought this is looking good. But, it was for them, but not us. No visit to as Pygmy Owl box juts tape calls to bring the male in which did not come. Tried three times, third after going away and coming back, taking more time up, despite having another location, the guide would not try. Asked why we did not visit the box, claimed only photographic tours did. When we got to the Tengmalms Owl box and he accidentally flushed the bird back in and would not come out again, and that was that, though we did see one at Kuassamo, but it was not a must bird for us though, just nice to see again. What we did find out from the guys on the same tour running a day behind us was that they were taken to a Pygmy Owl box, by the same guide, the next day, and saw it, and when he could not get the same Tengmalms Owl to come to the box hole, they went to a second box. A completely different and better service than we got. Our question, still unanswered was why did our trip on our day not visit a Pygmy Owl boxes when others did, even subsequently from other Facebook/twitter posts we have seen! FinNature would not give us a reply to this specific question. The other group, also on their Kassummo leg managed to visit two sites for Red-flanked Bluetail, without success. It was obvious the guys on our trip with the big cameras were wasting too much time during our trips, which lead to us having less time to ensure we got the birding in. The Oulu section was the worst and you would expect the guide knowing the route to keep folk to time. After missing the Pygmy Owl we had some spare time before we flew home, so we just asked FinNature could they help with the missing Pygmy Owl. Sadly I would love to say they were very helpful, they were not, far from it. First response was it was not an Owl trip, but when we go this response we had meet the other self drive trip and were now aware of their Oulu Owl experiences. Also, these are heavily promoted as Owl trips, by FinNature, and this was the first of many sloppy (ducking out) responses, even blaming us for not making it clear we needed Pygmy Owl (we would not have made it clearer other than shout at the guide) and the others on the trip for not wanting to go to the second location for one. They only person that never got anything wrong was the guide! So, if they get it wrong, do not expect them to respond positive or them give a crap. There are frankly a whole host of trips out there that to be fair often achieve all the species, but that is also the problem, they have the biggest cut of the market guiding numerous other tour companies and individuals, and if you lose out, your are not critical enough to care about. We even asked for a partial refund on the Oulu day, as we felt the guiding on our day was below standard in the end as we were getting nowhere with any later help catch up with Pygmy Owl, but you will guess where that went, no where as well. The mammal hides were superb, yielding all the hoped for species. The tip, if it is not going to plan and the guide is missing stuff, or you have people taking too much time photographing on what is a birding trip, speak up, loudly at the time, as even a pleasant request for help post trip will get the brush off. Fortunately we knew someone in Oulu and they as a favour managed to get us to a Pygmy Owl box so we did not go home without seeing one. FinNature what was so hard to organise this for us, rather than us having to do it ourselves? Would I use them again, nope, but we do appreciate many folk succeed and potentially never experience the lack of trip success on the Oulu leg and would recommned them. Our lack of recommendation comes from the after trip support which we found non-existent, sadly we had a total lack of help we got when we asked for it to try and not miss this one bird. Not even an offer to do it at cost. My wife also had a fall on the Oulu day, an unfortunate accident, not their fault, but it would have been nice to have heard they cared slightly how she was - still waiting folks - she's not dead yet thanks :)

Stayed a night with friends and had a blast! I recommend to book a night at Reenis instead of a hotel. It’s also much cheaper!
