Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Netra M100 contributionsNestled on a small island; this castle stands testimony to a heritage more than five hundred years ago. The Swedes and the Russians left their mark on its architecture particularly visible in the two iconic towers. Today Olavinlinna castle is a famous tourist attraction in Savonlinna, Finland particularly in summer. World class opera performers grace Olavinlinna in summer. There are also boxing nights and music concerts. Themed events; group bookings and destination weddings also take place during the year. The castle offers scenic views of its surroundings from every angle.
Children love to try pieces of armour as well as costumes and sit on the baliff's chair at the Little Duke's Hall.
The castle is divided into various segments. The permanent exhibition is located on the ground floor near the entrance. With a chronological structure and touchable scale models present here; various stages of the castle's constructions are effectively displayed. The chapel continues to conduct service. The King's Hall is the centre of attraction. Parts of this castle have withstood fire and are reconstructed. Being a heritage site renovation and restoration is still going on to preserve the monument.
Guided tours are available in Finnish; English; Swedish and Russian. Family gets a discounted package on entrance fee. We had a English guided tour and our guide explained every aspect of the castle in detail which transferred us to the various stages of its rich past and present. The guide answered our queries patiently and was eager to share information which made the visit memorable. Special mention to the lady staff at the ticket counter who suggested to take the optional guided tour which comes free with the entrance ticket.
Olavinlinna Castle beckons every visitor to have a glimpse of its interiors and savour its past.Written 3 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The ticket price was actually quite low for the level of performance, I can't complain. I enjoyed the modernization of props and costumes, I found it to be humorous in a way you would not usually think of Wagner's work and refreshing even though the libretto does not fit the action or prop literally, maybe flexibility of the mind is needed. I enjoyed it immensely. It was especially wonderful to see Karita Mattila in her role as Ortrud, it was like the role was made for her just in this time of her career. Tuomas Katajala was also quite exceptional in his role as Lohengrin.
The staff were very helpful and nice, it was easy to find the seat, restrooms and refreshments. But there were just too few restrooms, the queues were very long, it was quite difficult getting to the restrooms and the whole break was spend in queues. I can live with this as I attended alone but if I would have had company, I would have enjoyed some time to discuss the opera with them instead of waiting for the basics. If there would be any room for improvement, this would be it.
As a firs time visitor to the opera festival, I found it hard to find a parking space, this could be refined by better signage or something to prep a traveller but I managed to find a space after driving around for 20 mins. so ok.Written 18 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The operas are of very high quality and the service is out of this world.
I am wheel-chair bound and the personnel meets you outside the medieval castle and pushes, drags and almost carries you into the stands. After the opera the same again in reverse.
Everybody is friendly and this includes also the public.Written 21 July 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Indeed joy and music invaded the calm and clean rooms of the Museum up to late night. But a few days later I came back, to see the Museum: not a big museum, of course, but really instructive. Here you may understand the work, the fights of people in this Region, to bear climate high demands, but also to help Nature to survive better, to make Men and Nature live together healthy. You may finally look at seals, but also share love for sports and, why not?, look the curious exhibition of Barbie hand made dressed with Finnish costumes!Written 22 September 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - mWriteHelsinki, Finland1,310 contributionsTypical Finnish Market. It has standard farmers product stands, berry stands and coffee stand. Highly recommend to take a break, have a cup of coffee and something sweet to eat. Try "Lörtsy" traditional pie from the area. It is slightly greasy and available in sweet and salty versions.
At summer area is full of life and winter much less, more sellers in the morning.Written 23 July 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. So well that the cover of accompanied piano must keep closed. That is why during quiet moments the ventilation noise was a bit harmful. Anyway, this beautiful, quiet place is worth of visiting any time it is open.Written 11 August 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - mWriteHelsinki, Finland1,310 contributionsDuring a guided tour at the castle, you will hear a story how a black ram saved the castle. Goats and rams were raised normally at castle for the food. - niinan2Nurmijarvi, Finland1,780 contributionsIf you visit Olavinlinna castle and Riihisaari museum the also visit the steam schooner S/S Salama. It used to be a cargo and a passenger ship. It sank in the 1898 when another passenger ship hit it. It was raised in the 1971 and restoration work stared on 1972. There is also another ship, S/S Mikko, next to the S/S Salama.
