Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Botania is the former botanical garden of Joensuu University (University of Eastern Finland) but nowadays it is a tourist attraction. Botania consists of an indoor greenhouse and an outdoor garden. You have to buy a combination ticket to both of them. The indoor garden was better when it was owned by the university. However, the outdoor garden is very beautiful now. There are many interesting sitting places and rest stops there. I still would love more information texts about plants. Botania has a cafeteria, too.

Sometimes there are special events in Botania. Now they had many sand sculptures in the outdoor garden. They were very interesting and beautiful. At times they may have big tropical butterflies in the indoor garden. Years ago I saw many of them but not this time.

Joensuu Arboretum is situated next to Botania but actually it doesn't belong to Botania. You don't need any tickets in the arboretum. The area of the arboretum is 70 hectares and there are many trails there. Remember to visit the Rhododendron Park of the arboretum if you are visiting the area in early or mid June.

If you are interested in plants, it is a good idea to combine Botania and the arboretum. However, Botania is very interesting even if you aren't interested in plants. There are also artistical details and beautiful views in Botania.

An endearing and playful work that has truly been embraced by the people of Joensuu.

Eija Hänninen and Henna Onnela's bronze sculpture, Susi kosiomatkalla, won the public vote in the 2006 Susi Pop Art sculpture competition and was placed on its bench on Kauppakatu in May 2007.

This red brick Evangelical Lutheran church was built in 1903. It stands on a hill near the Pielisjoki River.

From the outside, the church represents the Gothic Revival style. The church has two asymmetric towers. The highest one is 50 meters high.

The interior has a more National Romantic style. It has three naves. The star vaults are stunningly decorated with rich plant ornamentation.

North Karelian Museum consists of three parts: the permanent exhibition named "Visiting Karelia" (on the second floor), temporary exhibitions and children's museum named "Mukulakatu" (at street level). Especially the permanent exhibition is very interesting and there is something for everybody there. There are own exhibition rooms for North Karelian general history, military history, religious life and even North Karelian rock music scene, including Nightwish.

There are many interactive parts in the exhibition. You can sit on a sauna bench and take a photo with a Finnish guy (a camera stand would be a good idea because it is so dark in the sauna). You may also listen many interesting tapes, including old spells or laments and Finnish rock and pop music (it is free despite of the note on the jukebox). You can listen (on your mobile phone) a free audio guide of the exhibition if you open it from the web page of the museum. So it is a good idea to bring own headphones with you.

Notice also that it is possible to buy a combination ticket to this museum and Joensuu Art Museum. Guided tours in English are available by advance booking (67 euros / 45 minutes on weekdays).

Joensuu's market square has been the center of the city since 1848.

From the middle of the market, you can find is a water feature, a fixed drinking water point. From the seating areas bordering the market, it's nice to watch the bustle of the market.

Market stalls offer both international food and traditional Karelian pies. Different happenings are organized on the market stage all year round.

This museum is located in the center of Joensuu, near the market square. The stunning Neo-Renaissance building is the former Joensuu Lyceum completed in 1894.

Permanent exhibitions include Finnish art from the 1850s to the modern days. You can find works from the most famous Finnish artists from the Golden Age of Finnish art. The exhibitions also include Eastern Orthodox icons, Chinese art, Greek and Roman antiquities, and European church art.

On our visit, the changing exhibition was a contemporary exhibition by the anonymous graffiti artist EGS and textile artist Niina Mantsinen. It was a quite different art experience.

The museum has a suitable size. You don't get an overdose of art.

A small but beautiful church. We really enjoyed studying the architectural detail of it, which I would recommend doing.

beautiful forest, we didn't have very much time on our busy itinerary to properly appreciate the peace and tranquillity here. Hope to come again to fully explore.

One of the oldest and best organized music festivals in Finland.
Various genres of music are present on the many stages, the general mood is good and it's almost always sunny during the festival!

Honkaniemi Beach (Honkaniemen uimaranta in Finnish) is situated 2.8 kilometers from the market square of Joensuu, almost within the precincts of Joensuu Arboretum. If you walk from the city center, it takes 30-40 minutes to reach the beach. Linnunlahti Beach is situated almost in the city center and Linnunlahti Beach is bigger but Honkaniemi Beach is more idyllic. This is a nice place to watch the sunset, too.
