Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- jjn12016Portsmouth, UK22 contributionsAmazing gardens to explore; plenty of shade, and a pleasant cafe. Well worth the cable car trip from Funchal. And you can either ride the wicker sledges or watch others doing so. We found this more spectacular than the botanical gardens, which require a second cable car ride - but do both if time permits.Written 26 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Chris SEglinton, UK628 contributionsTook the Combi 1 ticket at cable car station (cable car to Tropical Gardens and 2nd cable car to Botanical Garden plus entrance to Botanical garden (€35 per adult).
Fascinating trips on cable cars - the botanical gardens are well maintained and have a fascinating range of plants, a good place to visit. There are also various other interesting churches to visit up there as well as other gardens.Written 7 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. There are many small areas to explore including Camellia Avenue, Sunken Garden, Rose Garden, Long Border and the Ladies' Garden - which is where you find the tea house, which seems to be highly recommended in other reviews. There is also the Ribeiro do Inferno, a deep valley with tree ferns and indigenous plants. We particularly enjoyed exploring this area, although the paths would not be suitable for anyone with limited mobility or a pushchair.
The paths in the main garden areas are mostly good and although the gardens are spread out, there's not too much walking required to get around and see it all, although there is initially quite a long walk of 10 minutes or more to actually arrive at the gardens from the main gate.
We happily spent a couple of hours walking around, but in late April there wasn't nearly as many flowers to see as I had been expecting, so I imagine a visit in May/June to be much better. I did particularly enjoy seeing the yellow poppies however. There are a couple of lovely view points too. The gardens were very quiet when we visited with not many other visitors.
There is a bus stop right outside the main entrance, and a bus timetable with full information on how to get to Funchal - take Nos 36 or 37 buses. We were going to get a bus but found Bolt (the local equivalent of Uber or Grab) so quick and easy to use and so reasonably priced that we opted for a quicker car ride to the next attraction on our fun packed touristy day.
Open daily from 9am to 5pm. Tickets are €10 each. We recommend to spend upto 2 hours exploring the gardens.Written 21 March 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Bridget WTruro, UK51 contributionsA lovely collection of orchids. Some so delicate and really beautuful. The staff were very informative and helpful if you had questions. - OZS_ATWBudapest, Hungary2,853 contributionsIt is the Official Residence of the President of the Regional Government. It offers wonderful panoramic views over the harbour and harmoniously combines massive trees, palm trees, many specimens of indigenous flora.
Be careful, sometimes they drive out of the garden by luxury cars in a crazy way!Written 23 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Near the tennis courts there is super counter to get a tasty and reasonably-priced snack and drink - the Quinta Magnolia Bar
Today we had the chicken on a plate, with fries and salad - for Euros 5.00.
Adding a beer and tea we felt restored and able to continue our walk.Written 1 February 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. There are many old and interesting grave stones to wonder round and read. We even found the grave of Prof Paul Langerhans, who discovered the Islets of Langerhanger in the pancreas that are involved in insulin biosynthesis. There is also a small, simple but very nice chapel. A very peaceful and interesting place to walk around that shines a light on some of the history of Madeira.Written 24 January 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Laura TMiddlesbrough, UK6,928 contributionsWe had a walk along the Promenade and onto these gardens after we explored Praia Formosa (the black stone beach).
The gardens are pretty with a lot of cacti and some exotic plants and flowers. There are a lot of steps as the gardens are on several different levels, but there are plenty of seats to sit and admire the sea view. There are trampolines and soft play for the kids, paddle tennis and crazy golf. There's also a snack bar and toilets.Written 21 March 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Much of the plantings are overgrown due to age and some neglect...but you still appreciate the structure and grandeur of the landscaper's vision. Down the central drive you'll find a peek a boo view over looking Machico.Written 6 October 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Victoria P36 contributionsIt really isn't much but a few benches under some trees. So quite nice to find on a sunny day. We did see our first lizard here though.Written 31 July 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- scvroseFiddletown, CA1,016 contributionsWe travel the world and view rose gardens. This was an WFRS award winner, sure wouldn’t know it. No plaque anywhere around, you had to walk by the bungalows up and down stairs only for the strongest, handicapped would have issues, no wheelchairs unless they open the lower gate, some 100m away.
While the garden was pretty well deadheaded, the weeds were terrible, and about one quarter of the signage missing, plus dead plants here and there. They did have a good collection overall. Needs help.Written 17 June 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is easy to miss this place, it is opposite the Santa Caterina Park. Nice to take a strole around these old gardens. While they may have seen better days there are some lovely mature trees and range of different flowers.Written 30 January 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - David DDevon, UK19,792 contributionsThis is a stretch of gardens along the seafront in Fuchal it's borders are Rua R Jose da Silva " Saca" at one end with Avenida do Mar e das Comunidades Madeirenses along one side and the other end. The other side is enclosed by Rua D Carlos I
Praia do Almirante is the beach alongside the promenade area.
It is also within the boundaries of Zona Velha (Old Town).
The most noted feature is the Teleferico do Funchal, the cablecar that transports passengers between Funchal, Monte and back.
Funchal skatepark is also situated in the gardens by the cablecar.
There are a number of statues, sculptures and oddities dotted around the Park, some are named and some are not.
The most prominent one is the large statue of a footballer at the far end, on the former site of one of Funchal's first football fields. Another eye catching feature is the Monument to commemorate the 5th centenary of the creation of the Diocese of Funchal, the large cross could not easily be overlooked.
It really is an adventure walking along here as there is always an other interesting thing to see directly after seeing the last one.
There are loads of seating to sit and take a rest or just enjoy watching the wold go by.Written 29 July 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
