Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The building is gorgeous both inside and out. The history of the previous use as the town hall was very interesting. The main hall, atlas floor and gods and goddess statues are incredible.

Amsterdam has a great transportation system.

We used the trams to get around on several occasions and they were regular clean and comfortable.

If you will be using public transportion regularly best to buy the daily or weekly tickets. There is an office across from Central Station where you can obtain advice and purchase tickets. Its a large white building so you cant miss it.

The Square is large and is anchored by the Victoria Hotel on one side and the train station on the other. Across the river is a large Cathedral. There are water tours that leave out of here. A good reference spot to start and end your tours.

Though there isn’t much to see, I somehow love the Begijnhof. This medieval inner courtyard encircled by rows of brown and white houses dates back several centuries and is where the Catholic women (Beguine) lived during an era when the Catholic faith was banned in the 16th century. This place is an existing residential area though no longer occupied by any Beguines, so certain areas are inaccessible to the public. I find this place lovely as it resonates peace and calm amidst the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam city centre, and standing in the courtyard, one may even feel like they’ve travelled back in time to the medieval era.

You are left on your own to be "up close & personal" with several floors of look-alike personalities. Several interactive set ups. The creations are really well done and the eyes are so very real. We enjoyed our time here and got lots of pictures.

This was a great museum to get an 'introduction' to Amsterdam - how it developed over the centuries. It is really well laid out, with lots of interesting information, but you can move through it fairly quickly. When I visited there was a special exhibit about Espinoza, and a lot of contemporary discussions about what constitutes 'freedom'. It was a good bonus.
Personally, I wasn't too interested in all the Golden Carriage stuff - although they did a good job showing the overall context of the topic.
I recommend this for 'first day' overview of Amsterdam if you've never spent much time here before, and want to get a historical introduction.

Hema is a chain of lower priced department stores. They sell everything from food, clothing, household goods, office supplies and other items. I like the store on the Kalverstraat as it is not busy, is very clean and is usually stocked with goods. Not as big as some of the other Hema's but it has a good selection. If you are into serious shopping, then the one nearer to Dam Square might be better. Wheelchair accessible. Just take elevator down as it is in the basement of this mall.

Very informative about sex throughout the ages.
It really shows humans have always been a bit kinky.
Went to kill some time, but ended up rather intrigued by some of the artifacts

This tower, once part of the city’s fortifications, is a major landmark at a busy intersection near the Bloemenmarket.

This is the main street that will take you from the Central Station to the center of the city. It is filled with many cafes, restaurants and other attractions. It can be extremely busy during the high season.

Nieuwe Kerk means New Church which is ironic as the medieval church was conseqrated in 1409 but as it newer than the older church in Amsterdam its referrerd to as Nieuwe Kerk.

This church organizes high-profile exhibitions of art and photography.

It is located in the heart of Amsterdam, next to the Royal Palace on Dam Square. The entrance is on the Dam side.

Its not as spectacular as many other churches I have seen in The Netherlands.

This is a very busy street that runs through the commercial part of the city. It is lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants.

Lots of interesting, some leaning, buildings.
