This Basilica in the middle of beautiful Perugia is really worth a visit. Not overly big but with amazing detail in its decor and paintworks and you can just walk in, no admittance fee to pay.

This octagonal temple is not on the tourist track, slightly away from the centre.
We were alone there - very meditative experience.

Now the Church is open again. This wonderful Church is the only church who still has inside Templar Knights frescos paintings.
It is a magnificent church to visit and the frescos paintings are extremely important to be seen.

The artist Agostino di Duccio (1417-1481) worked on the facade of this Oratory (by far the most splendid part of the building) for four years, since 1457 until 1461. The result is a work enchanting for carving quality, in particular for the very refined draperies dressing the characters: it's one of the most memorable carving works of the fifteenth century in Italy, and certainly it's the most precious Renaissance work in Perugia.
The sculptures are influenced by the innovation introduced by Donatello, the scholars call "stiacciato": in modern Italian "schiacciato", ie crushed. The term means a sculpture in which the reliefs rise a few millimeters above the surface, so as to appear almost more like a painting. By this way, it's also possible to apply the artifice of perspective to the figures.
But the "stiacciato" technique is here interpreted in an original way by Agostino, particularly emphasizing the curved lines of the figures and above all of the clothes they wear: these feature thick and parallel folds: an essay of technical ability, which we would never tire of admiring.
Whoever knows the reliefs by Agostino at the Malatesta Temple in Rimini, will recognize strong similarities between the two works; and in fact Agostino works in Perugia immediately after Rimini.
Not only: here Agostino is also the author of the architectural part, ie the facade, then he is influenced by the powerful personality of Leon Battista Alberti, who at the Malatesta Temple had given an eloquent essay about the original way in which he interpreted the architectural lesson of ancient Roman age.
The delicate polychromy adds charm to the splendor of the architectural-sculptural façade complex: here soft versions of red and green colours prevail.
Overall, due to the references that it allows to both of these two great artists, such as Donatello and Leon Battista Alberti, and to the value in itself shown by Agostino di Duccio, this is a Renaissance work that doesn't resemble any other of all those I have ever seen, and which isn't to be missed by those visiting Perugia

The Oratorio, hidden away on via dei priori, is an absolute gem. The frescoes and paintings are superb, and there is a little garden with fabulous views. Extremely well maintained with a good documentation of its history. In our book, a must see in Perugia.

This large, Baroque church is in the historic centre of Perugia, on a side street, running off Corso Vanucci. It is about 3-4 minutes walk from the Cathedral and the main square.
Built between 1627 and 1634, the first Mass was celebrated in 1635.
The main highlights are the richly decorated frescoes from the 17th and 18th centuries. The church has been recently restored so the artwork is in good condition.
The large 17th century altarpiece painting features God with one hand outstretched in the act of creating Mary. It’s a very Michelangelo-Sistine-Chapel-like pose.
Higher up, inside the cupola, Mary is being crowned with a glittering ring of stars while small angels throw bunches of white flowers. It’s the angels that caught our eye. One pair of angels, giddy with excitement, seem to be waltzing, while another angel seems to be trapped under a cloud.
    Entry is free.

The church of St Agatha is so old that its earliest history is barely known. The building we see here today dates to around 1317 but it replaced an earlier church.
It's easy to walk right past St Agatha's and not notice it, partly because it is quite plain, partly because the entrance does not face onto the main street (via dei Priori) and partly because it is often shut.
What caught my eye was a small but brightly coloured painting of St Agatha, as a delicate and beautiful young woman next to the arched entry doors.
Inside, are ancient and faded frescoes that look much, much older than those we’d seen elsewhere.
The most unusual one shows a three-headed Jesus (near the door, on the right hand side). It is a rare reference to the concept of the Holy Trinity of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Later, theologians would find this image disturbing and were troubled by it’s association with beasts and the devil. In 1628, Pope Urban VIII banned it altogether. Few remain because they were either removed, burnt or sometimes cascading hair was painted to hide the offending side faces.
Above the altar, is a scene of the Crucifixion, painted some time between 1319 and 1333.
A lot of work seems to be going on to uncover and restore the frescoes which have been buried under plaster. It was interesting to see sections of plaster which have been cut away, exposing glimpses of colour from long-lost paintings which lie below.
OPENING HOURS: If you see the church open, pop in because it’s often shut. Opening hours are from 9 - 12 and 4 - 6 (in winter it doesn’t open in the afternoons at all). In two days, I only saw it open once.

This really is a very special place and well worth a visit. We were all enthralled by the paintings on the ceiling, similar to the Sistine Chapel, absolutely stunning. Such a peaceful and tranquil place with the mysterious confessional boxes along the side of the pews, very atmospheric.
