Scopello is a attractive little village with several bars and restaurants. Very quiet out of season but worth a visit. The tower is easily reached from the parking areas and is a steady climb of about 20 minutes. Views from the top are superb over the village, the old tuna factory and wide expanse of coast.

Not worth a special visit but not far from the Archaeological Park so take a look if you are visiting there. Lovely statue on the sea front with nice views across to Taormina.

In a tour guidebook I read during the planning of the trip to Sicily, it was written that the Palermo’s "New Gate" was built in 1569 in memory of King Carl V's visit to Palermo in 1535. Another guide states that the gate was built in 1460 and served for a long time as the main land access to the city. In 1667 the gate was almost completely destroyed when lightning struck fire dust warehouses that were near the gate causing a huge explosion. Regardless of the exact information of the two, for me the gate is beautiful with all the sculptures and especially the eagle’s head, which is made of Miolica tiles, on the roof.

This monument is to commenmorate an important event, practically a turning point,in Italy's political history. It has to be explained to a visiting foreign tourist as it has nothing to do with the Romans.

The highlight of this tour is the host (and owner) because he brings a degree of passion to the tour that you generally don't get elsewhere. We felt that we had somehow had special treatment because it was just such a great experience. Having read all of the other reviews we now see that this is the same feeling everyone else gets, which we think is a fantastic credit to both the family and the incredible building.
If you like historic buildings, art, architecture, history or stories, take the tour you won't regret it.

This is the entrance to the old town, and the last possibility of parking the car (not for free, though).

Rather an interesting fountain with surrounded by animal sculptures in the centre of a small square. Easily overlooked and should be part of your self tour of the main shopping street.

This is apparently the only 360 degrees view of the city. The tour was part of the church built in XIII century. There are three floors ( the panoramic view being on the third one). The steps are tiny and steep so it might be difficult for people who are not fit or who are elderly. I went there for a night visit which was nice but I think it's better to see it during daylight. I'll go back. The entrance fee is 4€ and there is a guide included who will explain what you're seeing. It is definitely a place to visit in Palermo. Make sure you check their opening hours cause I think they open only on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
