What travellers are saying
- TravelerWithOpinionsBoston, MA477 contributionsMemorable and beautiful exploration of the grotto, complete with bats, stalagmites, stalactites and waterfalls. Our guide Laura provided lots of useful information. We also appreciated that she could speak Spanish in addition to Italian. A fun adventure on a cool, foggy, rainy day.Written 13 October 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- G.B.871 contributionsRocca Calascio is one of the highest located castles in Italy. In it have been shot many beautiful movies (Ladyhawke, the name of the rose ...) Unfortunately the interior this year will be closed and it will be possible to visit only for external parts. But it is still very beautiful. It stands above a small village very nice. Definitely a place to visit. The only thing you need to know is how to reach it. I order the various options in order of preference.
1. If possible leave very early in the morning (the place is clearly always open), in this way you can reach by car the (tiny) parking in the village, park and walk to the Rocca Calascio. The walk is short (20 min), uphill but not difficult. You might be lucky and find free places also in other times, but only in low season.
2. If you can't go soon, then probably the village parking lot will be busy, so you should park your car in the town under the fortress (not the village, this town is called, incredibly , Calascio) and then take a bus that will take you to the fortress.
3. I saw people walking to the fortress directly from Calascio. This option is strongly discouraged because the road is not easy to walk.Written 7 October 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. You can go through the path of the mountain and arrive to a fantastic view from the mountain on the lake (starting from the hotel Roma, 45 minutes no more). Try! And then finish your travel down, on the bank of the lake, very nice and relaxing place, big sun but not so “strong”. Enjoy.Written 18 August 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- AnneBsmithLeeds, UK49 contributionsits a Bridge, you walk across it to get to the other side.
It is high above the ground.
It has a pedestrian lane and a bike and scooter lane.Written 28 September 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - paula cAtlanta, GA769 contributionsThis property had mixed reviews. I thought it was excellent - an immersion experience, and my husband was not up for the adventure. The property tries really hard to make it a great experience - and an immersive experience. What really caught us off guard was how noisy it was - our particular room. It was right next to the "Town square" and had poor insulation. Also, it was easy to hear the entire conversation of the room next to ours. However, in spite of this, I would recommend the place for the immersive experience. What I would suggest is that you pay more attention to requesting a room that is quite if this is important to you.Written 26 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - MadgnatsStuttgart, Germany96 contributionsThe highlight of one week in Abruzzo. Traveling by car you enjoy a variety of vistas including rocky valleys, jagged mountains, rolling plains, free ranging horses, sheep and cattle. Each turn in the road offers a different view and type of landscape. Clouds billow above and below, trees grow in densely wooded forests on one side of the mountain, and sharp rocky crags make up the back side, open hills and boulders dot the landscape. The end destination of the trip is an observatory and a hotel from World War II era. The trip is a beautiful rest from the busy cities and offers many opportunities for photos and just enjoying nature. Strongly recommend.Written 20 October 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- joeyo47 contributionsA major and very beautiful restoration in progress here following the 2009 earthquake. - no bs yogiSydney, Australia3,234 contributionsWhen you stand in the centre & look at all the faces of the 99 fountains it is eerie but wonderful.
The 99 fountains are thought to represent the lords of the 99 castles in the L’Aquila valley.
This was also a popular laundry for women 100’s of years ago.
Definitely worth a visit, & reading up on all the history whilst standing there completes the experience.Written 17 August 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We visited in March and the weather was mild; snow was still seen on the peaks. Our group was led by local guides who made all the difference, explaining things that you will not find easily in any guide book. If you like trekking in places like this, allow yourself plenty of time.
Facilities like toilets and cafes were not open - maybe it was out of season, maybe due to Covid? A popular site like this could perhaps at least try to keep its toilets available to visitors.Written 26 May 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It's possible to stop for a bite to eat (perhaps taking a sandwich or a coffee at the bar) but, most importantly, at a very low price you can access the reserve with the most competent (and at the same time funny) guide that I have the pleasure of hearing for a long time. You will have the opportunity to get close to the animals and even feed them! In addition, the guide will tell you several little known things (try asking how the selection of the alpha male takes place...).
In short, you will spend a few hours having fun in contact with nature.Written 11 December 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - G.B.871 contributionsThe fortress is a place of exceptional historical interest. It was one of the last fortresses of the "Regno delle due Sicilie" besieged (in 1860-1861) during the formation of Italy, as we know it today. Weapons such as those now on display in the museum were used and the roads you will travel along were used by soldiers during that and other sieges. The place, in short, deserves to be visited, but also deserves to be cared for more.
There are no audio-guides, nor was it possible to make a guided tour.
The information material, often small, is present only in certain areas particularly circumscribed, for the rest you will have to move along a path not well specified. There is only a drinks machine, when a bar would be very nice.

The whole walk took 2 hours and at the end, we walked back to the starting point on the road for 20 mins. We stopped by the Caramanico town for a quick lunch - highly recommended!Written 24 July 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - franketchesonOakville, Canada3 contributionsI keep going back to the Gran Sasso, it is different every time and a magical place from the wild horses on the plains to the hotel that housed Mussolini.
This mountain is spectacular.Written 5 June 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
